Smile starter

Hi, i am a newbie onthis site. Currantly own 62 starfire
past cars include 70442 conv 64 cutlass 4 speed
67 f-85
I recently rebuilt the starter on the starfire and discovered the windings seem to be silver. Never saw this before, Does anyone have any info on this

Welcome to CO. Perhaps they were coated, painted or covered. I think all windings are copper as it makes great conductor wire.

Sorry it took so long for me to see this post. The fields you have are aluminium. Delco used aluminium for a couple of years, but not in 62. The experiment was a disaster. I rebuild starters for a living and when I find the AL fields I discard them and use copper fields. The AL fields do not work as well and they are prone to separation where the copper lead to the solenoid is attached to the Al and a bit further down under the plastic they break. It is hard to test and it can't be tested good with an ohm meter test lite or volt meter because it will carry volts, but not amps. If possible find your self a set of copper fields.
