Running dual quads on a 394

Hi new to the forum and Oldsmobile world! I have a 64 98 that I picked up a few months back, the odometer reads 55k car runs great other than leaking a lil oil. I did a dry compression test and got 150 on all. I em thinking of running dual quads in the future and wondering if the motor will be able to take it or would I have to do other mods prior to that?? I will also be swapping to the 200 r4 as the slim Jim on this is ****.

Welcome to the site. I'll let others chime in on the dual quads and the trans swap. Post some pics of your 64 when you get a chance.

If the carbs are tuned correctly, should not have a problem. If the 394 is original to the car its a high compression engine anyway. If were me, I would locate a J-2 setup, much sexier! Either way you will not see much of a "seat of the pants" power gain. I would invest in the 200-4R conversion first, just a suggesion. X2 send us some pictures please.

I dont think the J-2 manifold is compatible with the later 394 blocks. There was a change in 59 and thats why no 3 2's on the 59. 58 was the last for that series engine. There are aftermarket intakes for multi carbs on these engines. A simple carb or multi carb swap will not hurt a good engine, its only the beating that may take place after some new ponies are acquired !

Oldsmanic, you are correct brother, just when you think you know it all! The J-2 Tri-Power setup will not fit the 394. There were differences between the 371 and 394, I believe in the port sizes. The 394 intake passages are much larger. Thanks.

Actually, you really just need spacer plates due to the slightly taller deck.

As for the dual quads, I ran a pair of 500 CFM Carters (precursor to the Edelbrock) on a 455 with a progressive linkage. The car was very streetable and actually got 15-ish MPG in a 71 Cutlass with 3.42 gears and my heavy foot.

You will have to have a adapter made to install the 200r4 trans.
Ross Racing makes the adapter for a T-400, may have to talk to him.
