rear end combo?

Greetings to all my fellow olds fanatics.ive followed this forum for a while and finally decided to join.by far the best one out there...period!
but lets get back to buiseness.i have a 71 olds cutlass supreme thats undergoing a big overhaul.i bought it when i got back from afghanistan and it needed ALOT of tlc.the good thing was the previous owner rebuilt the 350 and the drivetrain was solid.so it got painted, new vynil top and new tires and wheels.for the age the interior wasnt in bad shape so i took the bench out and threw buckets in there, ill finish the rest after the drivetrains all done.i did extensive research on 700r4vs2004r and decided to go with a stage 3 2004r from bowtie overdrive with a 2200 stall converter and a tci shfter.
back to my dilemma.i wanna go all brand new in the rear...diff,gears and axles if need be.ive been looking at some auburn units and detroit lockers as well.i wanna be effective light to light and on the freeway.this isnt gonna be a daily driver, but who am i kidding....do any of you guys have experience with this combo?part numbers possibly would be awsome!....almost forgot,im getting a 455 built by CME engines making 400hp and 400ftlbs,should be done around new year.sorry for such a long post, but any imput/suggestions would be welcome.thanks

Welcome to the site, your car sounds like it is well on it's way to being a very dependable street cruiser. You should contact our member Monzaz, he is quite knowledgeable concerning rear axles, and third members although he isn't the only one. You might also re-post your question in a different forum addressing your category of question. Good luck.

If it was me, I'd be worried about the longevity of an "O" type rear.
Since originality or price isn't an issue, I'd be calling someone like Strange Engineering for a price on a complete 12-bolt - 3:55 gears puts you throught the 1/4 around 6000 rpm, depending on tire size, and you'll have the added advantage of the overdrive.
Some of the guys here might be able to save you some money on the rear, too!

your 71 cutlass has a 8.5 , while not as strong as a 12 bolt chevy it`s the best of the 10 bolts. Give me a call and i can run some options by you.
