Newbie to oldsmobile

Hello Everyone,

Lifelong Chevy guy converted to a Cutlass owner. I have a question that I
have received mixed info on up here in Detroit. I have a 71 cutless s 350,
vin 336871, but ther cowl has 33607. Should they not match? if not why.
thanks in advance the car is 80% done and I hope to finish by June, for all the cruise's.

Mike, I know with the '68-9 442s many of the cowl tags did not match the VINs from the factory. This has been much discussed and documented in many places and is not regarded as a big deal. Maybe there was a similar situation with the '71 Cutlass. Hopefully somebody who has more detailed knowledge of '71s can chime in.

Welcome to C.O.! Post a picture of the cowl tag so we can see it. I believe that the zero should be an 8. I would assume that it should read 336871M_______
Assuming that it was in or around Michigan all it's life.

FYI Cutlass is the correct format

Work at my home. Is there a way to get a copy of the build sheet to compare options ?. I looked under the seat but the sheet was not there.

If you are talking about the "Body number" on the cowl tag (33607), it would be an absolutely pure coincidence if it matched your VIN. The body number is assigned by Fisher body when the body is assembled. The assembly plant assigns the VIN when the car is built at the plant. The two numbers are not related to each other in any way.

Welcome. If you are talking about the body code on the cowl tag, Olds didn't use the "07" body style designation for the 1971 model year. The only 2dr Cutlass models were the 67 convertible, the 77 Sport Coupe, and the 87 Holiday Coupe. Either the cowl tag is mis-typed or it really is an "87".

Just to clarify this post, the documented cowl tag discrepancies on the 1968-69 442s (and only in those model years) was very specifically in the MODEL designation (36 vs 44), not the body style designation. The two digit body style number on the cowl tag ALWAYS matches the VIN, period. And as I pointed out above, Olds did not use the "07" body style designation in the 1971 model year.

I understood what you guys told me, I also know a few guys into GM cars
That go deep into resto work. They told me basically what you stated.
The cowl tag is 87 holiday coupe right? The car is a number match 350 engine/350 transcar. The other thing I want to thank everyone for is the broad base of info that can be found here. The W-27 rear end info saved me 1000 on purchase, ( had the rear end cover, but well stated rear end was not a true 12bolt W-27, 8.5 3.42). The car is about 75 % done 62000 original talked him down to 15000.
