Newbie in Ia. 71 Cutlass

Hey there! Bought my boy a 71 Cutlass and since it needs more help on the body than we thought and we aren't body men we are going to focus on the power train. I will be asking lots of questions lol. Looking forward to learning from all you olds gurus!

Welcome to the site. Is this a father and son project? Post some pics when you get a chance.

Thanks! It is actually a grandpa, dad, son project. My son will be 15 he end of next month and is really into cars mainly thanks to fast n furious and street outlaws etc. he wanted a Chevelle but none in our price range so when I found the cutlass he wanted it as soon as he saw it. It runs and drives decent so for 5 grand I figured we couldn't get hurt to much on it. Of course once we got it home and started digging we found a lot of gremlins. It was pretty much hacked together. I mean it looks pretty good in pictures and from 30+ feet in person but body is gonna need a ton of work. We live on a gravel road, and he will drive it to school during nice weather so not real concerned with the body being all that nice, and he wants a rat rod look anyway. Just need some more power, a posi rear with about a 3.73 gear, and some suspension upgrades, and different wheels and tires to finish it off. On a very tight budget so doing a little hear and there for now. Not sure how to get pictures on here?

Welcome to the site. Hope you guys enjoy the old car. This place is a great resource and if you can't find what you're looking for, just ask.

Try this link for some help on posting pictures. Like anything, it gets easier after you do it a couple of times.

Look forward to seeing your Cutlass. I got into Oldsmobile as a result of my dad - he brought me home from the hospital in a '61 Dynamic. It's in my blood!

What part of Iowa?

We live in Milo, Ia. It is south central, about 30 miles pretty much straight south of Des Moines.

Born and raised in Clinton, county firefighter for 3 years. Hope to see more pics and hear about your plans. Olds are underrated. Hang on to it.

nice looking car ! Milo, I used to live in that genearal area years back, Pleasantville, a bit east of there.
Is the car an auto transmission? Or a 4 speed. Tried a 3:73 ratio in my 76 442, which has the turbo 350... Too low in my book, pulled 3k rpm going 65. Went to 3:42 and posi and like it a lot better... Only getting about 12 mpg with the car, granted has a 455

Yep know Pleasantville well. I'm actually originally from the martensdale st Mary's area and my wife was from Milo. We are going to put an OD trans in it so will be able to get away with maybe a 3.23 or 3.42. The 7r400 I guess has a low first gear so with the 455 we are putting in we shouldn't need anything lower than that. Excited to get things going just wish I had a money tree so we could do it all right now lol!
