Newbie here...was this a nice price?

Hi everyone!

I'm glad to find such a valuable resource for classic Oldsmobile knowledge, especially since I possess so little on my own. I hope to find a decent Cutlass or Skylark to use as a weekend driver but haven't had too much luck yet even here on the West Coast.

One car I saw recently had some cool stuff going for it but I passed on it. The seller was asking for about 6k and said that it had a non-original 455 and non-original Muncie 4-speed. The car was supposed to be running well mechanically but it was clearly in rough shape inside and had been recently stripped for repainting. Anyway, was I wise to pass on this car or should I be kicking myself for missing out on a fun car.

Thanks,
Barry

Yes I think 6k was a lot for this but depending on drive train if it was in good working order could be argued that it was worth 6k

I have seen nice cars go for less check through the for sales and get a good idea of pricing
Welcome

I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
You can probably find a "20-footer" Cutlass S or a Supreme with a 350 for around 6k. They won't have the 455 and 4-Speed, but they'll be good weekend cars.
I'm not from the West Coast, but I'm sure another car will turn up eventually.
Cutlasses are considerably more common than Skylarks around where I live.

I think you made a wise decision. The pics looked a bit rough for the money. Welcome to the site Rick

Welcome to CO from Georgia.

I think it was wise to pass on this car, although I see that it does have the ultra rare his and hers shifters. His is the four on the floor for sporty driving, hers is the automatic on the column for care free driving.

WOW, that was a good catch! I didn't see that at 1st glance...WTF??

Welcome to the site Barry. If you're in the market, keep your eyes open and most of all, be patient. There's still lots of cars out there, maybe not in your backyard but they're around. Some good deals and some not so good deals, your example '72 being 1 of the latter. I think you made a wise choice staying away for $6k.

Good luck with your search!

That thing is a whole bucket of WRONG
Be glad you passed it up.
I went to see a "442" in SF when I lived near Sacramento. No 442 badges. Smogger J headed 455. Wheel trim swinging loose. SB springs = bottom out over every one of the San Francisco hill cross streets. Bad everything. Only oh $4k in today's dollars. Water in the oil and vice versa.... no thanks.

Soon thereafter came the '68 convertible. 2x the money.... 10x the car. Turns out to be a factory W30... just missing all the W30 parts.

The only way your prospect was worth 6 large would be if it had a D, F, or H headed W30 engine in good shape. Even then, it needed 20k to be done right, even CLOSE to right.
