Newbie From Georgia

hello everyone, i just acquired my first ever classic and it's a 1957 Super 88 Golden Rocket Oldsmobile. (i think ) it is all oringinal except the fuel pump that i had rebuilt and the paint which is a primer right now. The data tag is Style/57-3669D, Body/L13594, Trim/382, Paint/90-91-22. i'm looking to find out if the motor is the original 371 but i haven't found the #'s yet, although it looks correct. I will get some interior and engine pics to post later. i'm gonna need parts and manual info on this one. some of the vacuums are not right and i would like to have original parts whenever possible.

Welcome to C.O.! Very nice looking car. Is the exhaust hooked up to the slots in the bumper? Where on earth did you find purple primer?

Yes, you do have what is called a Golden Rocket 88 4-door sedan. The other 88 series that year was the Super 88.

The base price of your car $2,778, and it was the second-least expensive Olds offered that year. The 2-door sedan was cheaper at $2,713. The standard engine was, as you noted, the 371 V-8 putting out 277 hp. A 300-hp version, called the J-2, was available on any Olds that year. It was a set-up involving three 2-barrel carburetors, and, from what I've read, had a reputation for being difficult to keep properly tuned.

Production of your car was quite high at 57,251 Golden Rocket 88 4-door sedans built for 1957. That's the highest production of any 1957 Oldsmobile series and style. Second highest at 50,787 was the Golden Rocket 88 Holiday Coupe (2-door hardtop), and third was the Super 88 version of your car, the Super 88 4-door sedan, with 46,688 units coming off the line.

Good-looking car. Thanks for the photos.

no the exhuast isnt in the slots but it looks like it, that would be cool. and the purple primer was all ready on there. it still has the original two tone paint on the inside. half gold and half white with green interior, and yes mommy made me do it,ha. and im glad she did. thanks for all the info, mine doesnt have the J2 setup just single 2 barrel, runs great though!

I have some pictures of 2 1957 models from our club. If you like, I can post some shots I took last year, or send them to your home email. They might be helpful for you as you go through your build.

Here's what I took, It will have to go onto 2 posts. Limit on pics is 5/post
I'm going to have to start making a photo library of the cars that I see at shows. Looking back, I realize how many detail shots would have been nice to get. Maybe later this year. The owner of these cars is from around Edmonton and goes to some of the summer cruises.
