Newbie from France

Hi everybody! Very happy I found this forum.
In april, I bought my first "collection american car": A cutlass supreme sedan hardtop '72.
Since I was a child, I dream a car like that. I was born in '66... this number "sound's good", n'est-ce pas ?
I found it in france. This car is... my all favorite I saw and try. Can you imagine the face of everybody in the french street that never saw and hear a car like that. Like in a movie. YES, each time I drive it, I am like in a movie. The life is different.
My cutlass was bought in France in 72. The car is in perfect state. I am the fourth driver. I try to found some picture of car like mine, it look like very rare.
Now, I have some mechanic to do:
I change the exhaust manifold joint last summer.
The muffler is rusty so I would like change the single muffler for a double stainless muffler. I think the engine (5,7) will be a little free and the sound of the engine will be more cool... for ever. Do you think I have to adjust the carbu after this change?
But perhaps it's not a good idea, I don't know.

Welcome to CO. I don't know how shipping is in France but in other countries in the EU it can be a little restrictive. However, I would recommend purchasing a full dual exhaust and have a local welder/exhaust shop install it for you, unless you can weld yourself. You will be so pleased with a brand new full dual exhaust system. They sound so nice.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. Pretty cool to hear of another European citizen cruising around in an American classic car.

In regard to your carburetor question, the more experienced guys can provide a comment.

You have good taste and a great car. Welcome to Classic olds. It must be out of place like a Citroen would look in Minneapolis. I gave some German foreign exchange students a ride in an old 1969 SS396 Chevelle I had years ago and they really liked it. It seems whatever country your from, people always like cool cars.

Le Welcome.
Love your French toast.

Chevrolay/Chebby is French, I don't know what nationality Oldsmobile is?
I heard it used to be Mc'Oldsmobilenovitchula so maybe he was Scottish-Transylvanian?
The officials shortened it during immigration at Ellis Island back in the day.

Sometimes you do have to adjust your idle mixture a little after you install dual exhaust, no big deal.

Welcome to ClassicOldsmobile.com!

You will see that there is a wealth of experience in many of the people in this forum.

I can't imagine the thrill you get driving your CS on the French streets! I know the thrill I get driving my Blue Belle on our South Carolina streets!

Welcome again, and what is your first name?

And welcome Titan2. Nice to have a good looking green 72 tin top on the site for a change

Welcome Titan2,

Congrats on your 72 Cutlass Supreme Hardtop.

I just finished rebuilding Carburetor on my 78 Olds Cutlass Supreme.
Made a big difference in power and smoothness of idle.
Good luck on your new exhaust. Finding parts for Oldsmobile in France....
is it tres dificile?

Best,
Daniel

Thank you everybody.

Find part is like you, all parts from USA. A little more expensive but (sorry for that) change euros/dollars is good for me
Perhaps You know good place in USA where I can buy parts on internet? Merci !

For the new exhaust, I find a man and his job is working stainless. So he make it just for my car. Like that, I haven't problem with size. My CS sedan is more longer than a 442 and I think some exhaust parts have to be special? I'm not sur.

Very nice car toro68,
I don't think I saw a toronado in France. I know there is one here :
perhaps more ( don't know). Like my car, the only one exactly (hardtop) like mine I saw in photo in internet is ... mine.

Col Wickham,
"Which way would you adjust the mixture with a dual exhaust Blue ? Richer or Leaner?"
Actually my car is a very little leaner and can you confirm I have to richer a little with 2 exhaust?

Diego
"So your speedometer is in kilometers?" YEAH

Another Idea, the wath is broken and I would change it for a ... (I don't know the name in US), in french it's"Compte-tours". Do you think it's possible?

If the clock is not close to the steering wheel, I don't think you would want to put a tachometer (compte-tours) in the clock opening. The tachometer should be in an ergonomic place that would allow you to keep your eyes on the road...unless the tachometer is for your passenger's pleasure.

You are right it's not for my passenger's pleasure BUT for mine. No problem.
I was thinking of that because my clock is here (I found this photo on the net but excatly the same of mine except the white).

.
Just near the speedometer.

What cutlass model I can find tacho on and could be good for me?

I was in France this summer for my little brothers wedding. I remember thinking how awesome it would have been to have my 70 SX and cruising down the road next to all their tiny little vehicles.

That is very fortunate to have access to someone who can do this for you. I don't think you will have much difficulty finding mufflers. Take a close look at the space where the mufflers go, maybe take some measurements and go shopping from that point. Most stuff made here in the States will be in inches but it shouldn't be difficult to convert from centimeters to inches and back. As you probably know, there are a LOT of different mufflers to choose from and there have been many threads about that on our site. It boils down to a subjective selection, decide what kind of sound level and performance you want and then make your muffle choice.

Bienvenu au forum titan2.

I wonder if I can order a km/h speedometer from France for my Cutlass? There is so much math involved in checking my speed converting from mph to km/h at each sign!

You are right, it doesn't mind. It's just mean, this car is not an importation few month or year ago. This car was sell by GM in Paris/France in 1972. It's mean, it's not a mysterious car coming from somewhere in USA. Better to sell and buy.

Thank you. That was exactly I was thinking: choose sound. I have to take time and try to hear many car.
Performance will be better with 2 muffler. I don't want change radically this car like a muscle car because it's not a muscle car. But a little more power will be great for leave majority of european car behind me...

Hi everybody!

Some news of my car:
I finally change my muffler for a big single stainless (diameter 6 cm) and the car seems to have more power now. The man who did that, make a very good job. One complete day to do it. The muffler look like art... But the better is the sound. It sound like a race car now
The car is more noisy but a very good noise... very much better than music in the car.
very near I live, I found a garage (very lucky) who repair rare car like mine and he adjust the carbu for my new muffler.
The last mechanic i did: repair the climatisation.

Everything is fine now. I have just to drive. I can say it, I love my car.

I will post photo very soon.
