Newbie..car girl outta OR..69 Cutlass S w Q's
I love old cars, I have a 69 cutlass w some issues, however that is not the Q of the day... my Q is in regards to an 84 cutlass s brougham, w a 307 and 174 thou on the motor, this is a car I am considering buying. She is in primo condition considering she is 30 yrs old, were talkin everything works and she is completely stock, even has original radio that still works!! she has been garaged an well maintained all her life, she belonged to an older women who kept her taken care off, lots of paper work of things done.. but one thing that hasnt been done ever is the timing chain, as far as I understand those should be replaced every 100 thou or so, is that correct or is it possible that because she was so well kept the T chain could last longer..? The reason I am concerned is because if I buy her I am goin to need her to run for me for at least 6 mos before I would be able to afford to have the T chain replaced, paying for the car is goin to clear my bank account..but I feel like I would be a fool to pass on her..any thoughts?

At 174k, it'll be due for a timing sprocket.
Whether it goes 6 mos. on the original is a gamble. They will run a long time on really worn sprockets, but then you get to drop the pan and clean the stuff out of the oil pump too.
Can you do any of the timing work yourself, or are at the mercy of the local garage? That might be a $500 job to have done.

At 174K, the nylon teeth are already off the cam sprocket, but, as Octania says, they'll run a good long while like that.
If you really like it, I'd say buy it, and start saving for the repair.
Better yet, start buying the tools you'll need to fix it, and when you've got them all, just git'er dun!

X2 buy it and drain your account lol, it will be the best account draining experience in your life. Timing chain is no big deal all the guys here would certainly help you out here if you get a set of sockets, wrenches and a good arm strong will to do it .

Lol, ya im like 99% sure Im gon bring her home tomorrow ...fingers crossed she becomes my new ol faithful!! She is way too good to let get away, and the price I plan to get her for is ridiculous!!
I have tools, and Im pretty sure there really isnt anything I cant do if I really try, but when it comes to doing something new like a timing chain I hav to admit Im a lil hesitant to attempt it myself..usually I just google or you tube stuff but this job I would def want someone there who 100% knew what they were doing ya kno

U think its possible to walk me thru rewiring my 69? Lol that's one of my next projects ... Already have the complete harness front to bac now its jus a matter of gettin the guts and confidence to attempt it

The only thing I wire up is myself on a Saturday night... but Eric is also very good with wiring as well as others here, Just fire off your ?s in the appropriate forums and you'll get all the help you need. Oh ya the guys really like car pics so that's your next priority lol. Put-r-ther good luck with your purchase !!!

I think its Franky's (Dr.Frankenstein is her name, cuz she makes the monster outta me) fav color too, every time I started talking about her final paint color something else goes wrong w her so I hav to focus my attention bac to under the hood stead of her body.. is what it is, I still luv her

Welcome, sounds like you found a great project. The only thing is generally at 170k+ miles it may eventually need more than a timing chain. Yes we do like pictures.

ol cragar rims..gotta luv ol school...was already think while franky is parked I would put her original wheels back on her ...and throwing the cragers on the 84 cutty Im bout to go get tomorrow.. gotta give her a lil style w her totally stock lil self right..plus I dont like the 84 stock wheels at all..if nothin else I could put the 69's on the 84...decisions decisions..haha

I want the 84 to drive on the reg. My 69 is for fun, and she is a gas pig the way we roll sometimes..I hav considered doin jus what ur saying ..even called places in town to get even a ball park fig on what it would cost me and 2 outta 3 gav me the "stop no and don't" basically.. even told one guy it didnt even sound like he was interested in taking on the job, needless to say she my baby an I would rather jus do it myself anyways in the end.. I jus dont hav the time or the garage right now to even work on the 69..I work an I really jus need another ol faithful.. *ol faithful was my $550.00 86 grand prix I drove for ten yrs

Be sure to check the underside of the '84 for RUSTY FRAME, esp. aft of the rear end.
They can look great bodywise and yet have no frame left.
Some rust is expected
If you see large flaky rust, look for gaps and holes.
If you stand on the bumper and it sags, that's a bad sign.
Of course, it ya drive it like an old lady, it can be driven with lots of frame not quite intact.

Paint is great but primer is finer. I have always liked the primer look but I can never commit I always end up with paint. Good luck with the purchase im a fan of the 80's g body.

Well I jumped in and got my 73, though I know I am going to hear it from my dad lol Heck if the price is right, how can you lose. Plus it's another one for the collection lol! Good luck! As for doing the timing chain, not so sure myself, I done all kinds of things from dropping trannys and motors out of bugs and buses, but I tried to do a timing belt once, never again! LOL It did not go well. It's has 97k on it so maybe with some duct tape it will hold on until I can hit my dad up to help lol

X2 nice and clean surprisingly, These cars are easy to maintain and are getting hard to find with decent rear frames, they also rot around the trunk seams, Nice daily driver I would go for it if it has a clean undercarriage. I had an 86 same style with t-roof, cragars etc with the stock chebby 305 loved it. These cars are getting harder to find up here in Canada decent ones go over 5k plus.

I swooped my new baby today...and I think I already love her! She runs good, sounds great ..I still can't believe how clean she is! I have a stack, literally a stack of paperwork regarding all work done from the day she was bought new off the lot in 84, there is even a recall notice sent out in 89 in the stack and w that there is the invoice for the issue being repaired a month after they got the notice, this car was seriously taken car of and there is paperwork to prove it! Only thing I didnt find was anything on the T chain.. so to me there is still an issue cuz idk for sure, almost seems like it would hav been mentioned to them back in the day tho right? and w all the reg maintenance they did wouldnt u kinda think they would hav done that too? Either way I am super happy w her, and for 1600 I dont think I can lose much on this one!! oh an she even came w a set of snow tires!! lol awesome!

I would find a nice running 350 and swap it out. No mods just a nice stock 350 with a 3.23 gear out in the rear end and it would be a really nice cruiser. That's just me I can't leave anything alone lol.

I'm right outta Eugene about 30 miles.. any chance your a engine pro and have the tools it would take to remove bolts from my 69's exhaust manifold.. I hav the new gasket and all new bolts already.. but one bolt is already broken off in there, it was like that when I bought her, and Im afraid more mite break off while trying to remove them... something I cant mess w, Ive tried removing a broken bolt before an broke the easy out and all kinds of other drill bits in process... :/
