Wow, what a welcome! It is the baroque brown. I want to go to a lighter blue with a white stripe or possibly the two white stripes on the hood. The white interior is mint. The car is all original with 1 re-paint of the original brown, will changing the color greatly de-value it? I plan on keeping it for years but was wondering. Thanks.

Your car might lose a LITTLE value but I do not think you'd regret switching to a "correct" color provided you realize & undertake the additional expense of having it done completely & correctly. I've seen lots of Baroque Brown vehicles so I wouldn't call it a rare (or flattering) color to begin with.
Being someone who appreciates original-appearing cars, I believe non-original colors ("canary yellow", most shades of orange, "resale red", "California Gold" come to mind) etc. totally ruin an original vehicle & I would think twice before picking a color because maybe it looked good on a Viper/Vette/Challenger/Mustang/etc.
Something as understated as a factory white pinstripe exactly like what's on your car now can bring the outside & inside colors together & look quite classy, esp on a convertible. My personal opinion is that your car already has a white top & white interior and those big ol' white stripes would be too much white* I would think your car in that light metallic blue with the white pinstripes/top/interior would be an absolute knockout.
I battled with the same decision colorwise on my non-vinyl top "Mesa Tan" (BAARF!)/white interior '73 Pontiac but finally decided that I would go for it (although I'll probably never get around to it). I was thinking about slate blue, a common light blue '73 color as I think a light metallic blue/white is a nice color combination.
*Personal opinion... I'm not a fan of stripes on non-stripe-equipped cars -- Stripes in my opinion were purposed to symbolized a limited production usually high-performance car that was something really special (1st gen Z28, W30, Cowl-Induction equipped Ch*velles, Judge, etc) but now it seems like everyone adds them.
I agree that the White top and interior will allow you to change colors with two less things to worry about. I would think changing the color to a non-72 Olds color would have a slightly more negative effect on the value but most people would think that going from Brown (or Gold) to Blue is probably an improvement. Also, the change in value from a color change is really only significant on the more high dollar cars.
Olds had some really nice Blues in '72 - Nordic, Viking, etc. Blue and White is an awesome combination, but I also agree with the previously mentioned striping issue. Unless it's a ram-air hood, the big racing stripes on the hood don't really work for me, but it's only important that it work for you. Spend some time looking at these cars in the various shades of Blue and see what you like - Google, Bing, etc.

Good lluck.

Man, thanks everybody! Confirmed some thoughts I had on the stripes, I will look at it. Could do a thicker (3-4 inch) stripe down the sides, I saw a 442 with that online. I want to keep my originality and not look like I am trying to be a 442.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
What do you think about the stock stripes that the car appears to have on it now? Maybe they'd look more attactive with a different color combo.
Anyway, it's nice to see a Supreme Convert every now and then that hasn't been ram-aired, striped up and winged out, but that's just me. In the end, it's your car so do what leads you to sporting a nice big grin

Thought I would post a follow-up to all who kindly gave their opinions. Here is a link to some photos. http://72cutlass.com A couple photos are dull but that is my phone-cam. I have to admit I regret the hood stripes. Especially since I can run faster than this thing. Rather than try to un-ring the bell I am going to forge ahead and make it a 442 tribute. I know some are not fans but at the end of the day the ram-air hood in this color gives me the biggest smile. Changing to a 455 engine is probably 18 months away. Ordering emblems and grill this week. It's my first swing at this and as they say, "education does not come cheap."
Thoughts/criticisms are welcome as well as suggestions on getting a 455 in AZ.
Thanks!
