hi

Welcome. Nice car. Correction the car in the pics is a 1971. In your intro you call it a 1972.

Aren't those grilles and the thicker chrome skirt signs of a '71 as well? I like the style of the front bumper as well. Might have to pick one of those up some day.

Beautiful, nonetheless! The more pics the better. Love it!

Authentification Data

I am like you. Bought my 1972 Cutlass Supreme Convertible with 442 option package and have been researching to see if all is correct. Only things I found were dual exhaust with bumper cut-out and 442 glove box symbol added after-market.
Attached is an article I found that explains some of the differences. If you look under 1972 you'll see there were few changes from '71 to '72 as there was a strike going on. The tailights and grill were two very noticeable changes.

Pics of Front and Rear

Attached are some pics of the front and rear of my car. I believe the grill and tailights are correct.

That louvered hood is a 442 hood. And the front bumper guards are an option. I love it! Gives it a whole new look to the front end

The 442 version of the louvered hood would have an 'Oldsmobile' emblem on the driver's side front corner. These appear to be Cutlass S hoods unless the 'Oldsmobile' script holes were filled as part of a respray.

Hi -
Welcome to CO. I'm from McMurray/Peters Twp., just south of Pittsburgh and about 45 minutes from you. I am a '70-'72 Supreme fanatic, and that is a '71 Supreme in every sense of the word. Halo vinyl top, wide side stainless, die cast grilles, taillights, etc. Does your VIN have a 2 in the middle surrounded by two letters, like M2M or H2K? If not, it's not a 1972. Hope to see it around sometime - it looks great. I think I saw that car on Craigslist and it looked really clean. You'll have fun with it - they're really nice cars.
Terry

Your clear title matches the V.I.N.
#'s on the cowl plate I hope.
I was thinking that looked like a 71.
If it does match up, check very closely
to the rivits for the cowl tag.
I don't know why someone would try
to fake a Cutlass though.

Welcome to the site. There are some great folks on here with massive amounts of information. I should know, I bother them every day with questions
Other than the hood, your car looks exactly like my 71. Well, the hood and that beautiful red color. I'm a bit envious.
I just double checked and mine has some upper body trim which yours doesn't have if that's any help. I like the look without it better.

Because they are a highly desirable item

I don't think anyone was trying to fake anything. It was likely a later build '71 that sat on the lot unsold into the 1972 calendar year, and some genius at the dealership titled it as a '72 when someone bought it. It definitely happens.

Exact same bumper, it just has the optional bumper guards bolted on.

Forget the title. What does the VIN say?. Everything about your car screams 1971 not 1972.

He should post his vin and cowl tag #'s.
Then let them speak for themselves.

Thanks Keegan. The orange (Rallye Red) car is a 1970 Cutlass Supreme SX 455 convertible that I bought in 2003. It's not perfect but it's very original and well documented, and I definitely enjoy it in the summer and fall months.

That's a '72 VIN. K=350 4 barrel with single exhaust. M after the 2 is a Lansing built car. Weird.

honestly everyone, this car was never presented to me as anything else than a 1972, the owner redid the car in 93 and has sat since then. And I will represent the car as the same its a 72. He put it back together how he apparently what he liked. I like it more importantly my wife loves it. We will enjoy making it our own. To all those that have made comments that you like it, well thank you very much. happy to be here.

Its a 1972

Correct it or not. You two love it, that's what matters. Besides, the '71 tail lights look better anyway
