Newbie with 68 442

Hey guys thanks for letting me join. I just bought a 68 442 with an 455 engine an th400 trans out of a 73 Delta 88. I hope I didnt make a big mistake by not doing my homework first as the car originally came with a four speed. I am new to this so any and all help is welcome and needed thanks.

All Olds 442s in 68 came with a 400Big Block, except for Hurts Olds models, and majority came with TH400s. It's a lot more rare to find one with a four speed in 68.

I love 68s (although im a bit biased )

Welcome to the site. Lots of helpful friendly people here. The 73 455 will certainly "work" in the car provided things are hooked up correctly. It is just not what the car came with.

Except a Hurst Olds was not a 442. All 442s came with 400s. 4-speed were not exactly a lot more rare. The automatics were about 2 to 1 over the stick cars in '68.

stock headers? I have never heard of these in 68 442s. But with headers and 2.5 pipes with the flowmaster 40s, you should be ok.

I have researched quite a bit on what pipes to go with on these 68 400 engines and 3 inches seems to be too much. 2.5 pipes seems like the best way to go and the flowmaster 40s sound great.

If you have the stock manifolds then you will probably need new headers to get the sound you are looking for.

Exhaust is also the next project on my 68 442 once I have the money for it. I already have the flowmaster 40s on it with 2.25 pipes and the sound is decent but not loud enough.

You may even want to look into getting an x pipe . I have heard of people getting significant performance gaines through it. I think coppercutlass on this site knocked down 1 or 2 tenths in his quarter mile by adding an x pipe.
