Newbie- 64 Oldsmobile
Thanks for letting me join. My question is i am working on a 64 Olds super 88 with the 394cid .Does any Body know where i could get a diagram of all the vacuum lines on the engine and to the firewall. THANK YOU!
The 1964 car is very simple vacuum-wise. You can probably find it on wildaboutcars, if not spring for the 5-volume 1964 factory service manual set as it will prove invaluable in the long run.
You should have one small vac line from carb base back around to the distributor vacuum advance, another small one from back of intake manifold to the small port on the PCV valve, and a large one going to the power brake booster. You will also have a vacuum storage can for vacuum operated accessories such as heat/AC.
Sedan or hardtop?

Here's a set for sale now. This particular seller has them a bit pricey, in my opinion, but you can search around.

As noted, the wildaboutcars website has them to view, but there's no substitute for having the actual, paper copies in front of you while working and to flip through when looking for information.
Your Terre Haute auto parts store employees are correct. Your car was (I'm pretty sure) built before the era of PCV valves. This is something that the service manual would tell you.
Well when you are disabled and its hard to push the keys you might just make a few mistakes. So i am sorry i spelled computer wrong. I thought i was asking a question about my 1964 Oldsmobile Super 88. Not my spelling!
Look on passenger side valve cover. There should be a gizmus on it with one large tube going to the aircleaner snout and a small nipple with a vacuum hose that routes around back of the carb to the intake. That is your PCV valve.
How it works? most people I know say FM, but the thing has a flap inside it. At low speeds, standstill or idle, the vacuum line lifts the flap off its seat and allows blowby gas to be sucked thru it into the engine. At higher speeds when airflow into the aircleaner snout is high, the airflow past the snout end of the tube creates a venturi effect and sucks blowby gas back into the engine thru the aircleaner and carb. At cruising speed (steady state high vacuum) the small vac line again lifts the flap off its seat and allows a lot of blowby to pass it and route thru the aircleaner.
Proper operation is dependent on two things: the PCV valve itself being clean with the flap free to move, and the breather filter in the oil cap also being clean so fresh air can be drawn into the crankcase.
I'm gonna tell you up front- the PCV is not the only thing on this car that is going to freak out a modern computerized parts jockey.
YOU'RE the one who pointed out that you had trouble with computers, and I thought it was funny that you even mispelled the word "computer" in that sentence. I was just having a little fun with you. That's what the little smiley (
) means, OK?This is a text-based medium. There are no pictures of users. We can't SEE you, we don't KNOW that you're disabled. If you want people to know this, tell us upfront. Otherwise, the natural assumption is that you're not.
