New from Ontario Canada

Hey Guys and Gals,

Good to be here and I am sure I will be bugging all of you for help as I am pretty new to restoring cars. I can do most of the mechanical work as I have been fixing my own cars since high school but will definately need some of everyones insight on restoring these old cars.

Oh I guess I should say what kind of car I have lol. I just bought a 66 Cutlass and it is being delivered this Saturday. It needs some wiring and the tranny has a leak and needs tires and probably some brake work but other than that the car is pretty soild for safety purposes. Over all the car is very solid. Underneath is very clean and rust free...floors and trunk included. There are a couple small spots on the body that need work but nothing major and it is all steel which is rare in these parts so that is one of the reasons I bought it as I am not very proficient with body work and not a big fan of doing it lol.

Ok I have bored all of you far to much now and will not go into the details of the help I need here so I will post those needs in the appropriate sections.

Cheers to all and I looke forward to interacting with you all.

Here are some pics and I will post more on Saturday when I get the car.

All the above work you just mentioned, i got all my brake tools at princess auto!

I think the bender/flaring kit/ and few other misc tools cost less than 30 bucks, and i bent eveything myself.

Cheers,

Welcome to the forum. Looks like a nice car, I'm sure you won't be able to sleep until Saturday!

BTW, I see you have bias ply tires on it, if you plan on driving her a lot, I would get some radials. It will ride and handle much better.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Ya Stan it was made in Lansing.

Old Skl they are bias tires but I have 15 inch Rally II's with radials on my 77 Lemans that I think I am going to put on it until I can get some better rims.

And Tony your right Princess Auto is where I get most of my tools as well.

Is the car plated? because i got my cutlass from the gatineau area just around ottawa, it has been hell and high waters trying to get that car plated in quebec.

What's the smog and emmisions stuff in ontario like? I know for us in QC, as long as it's pre-75' they dont really look at the emmissions stuff at all.

Cheers,

Tony

Hey Tony, no it won't be plated I have to do a little work to it before I can get it saftied and in Ontario there are no emmisions to worry about on older cars.

I do need an appraisal however because the MTO won't go by bill of sale so I am hoping to get a good guy for the appraisal and then I will use him again for insurance purposes.

So if any of you know a good appraiser in and around the Stouffville area let me know

Cheers

Oh I will be getting it before I do any work on the car that is for sure. I just hope I can get a reasonable appraiser. I would hate to have it appraised higher than what I paid for it because then I will be paying taxes on money I never even spent. Don't you just love the government.

Hey,

I totally knew a couple girls back in college from Stoufville area, but unfortunately none of them do those types of inspections :P

I got my inspection done by whoever was suggested by the motor board out here in quebec, i had the same issue, they wouldn't plate it otherwise, it cost around a hundred dollars, but it was well worth it.

I'm going to use them again when i get the car insured and on the road, let me know how your adventure goes with plating your car. I've had to fight a little bit with the quebec bureau since i need to have a mechanical inspection done..

Cheers,

Tony

Hey Tony....to bad about the girl lol.

Ya I got a couple of names from the MTO girls for appraisers in the area so I'm pretty sure I will use one of them unless someone else has any ideas.

I also need a safety to get it on the road but just to transfer the ownership I need the appraisal but at least with that I can get a temp plate if I need it just so I can get it to the shop and have it saftied when it's ready to go.

Cheers

Well Craig I was kinda busy going over the new toy lol. Plus a few probs as well...the battery is dead...so we had to boost it to get it off the trailer...I'm thinking he swaped it out or it was freshly charged when I went to see it. Anyway when I went to see it it was on E so after I got it in the driveway and got all the crap outta the trunk and vacuumed the leaves and dust and crap outta the car and took all the pics I put it on the charger. I then proceeded to get rid of the wasps nest in the passenger side door well...that was fun I got her fired up no probs and after I unhooked the charger to move it in closer to the house it ran outta gas lol. Now me being the type of backyard mechanic that I am I like to partake in an adult beverage or two or three while I do my thing So there was no going to get a new battery or gas lol and the better half is out an about until probably dinner so I'm probably **** outta luck until tomorrow. All's good though I got the Glen qualifying recorded and the Nationwide race recording now so while I watch that I will upload my pics to the comp and then to photobucket (so as not to flood a post with a ton of pics) and then I will post a couple here (with the photobucket link) and then I will start a build thread with more pics there.

So stay tuned the pics are coming

and thanks again all of you who have welcomed me aboard...I hope I don't wear out my welcome with lots of stupid questions cuz there will be many

Welcome to a fellow Ontarion, you chose your site wisely, this is one of the better Olds sites very well managed and lots of great technical advice...I'm building a '72 Cutlass from scratch based on the invalueable feedback from this site. Real nice ride by the way.

Welcome aboard. I'm just up the street from you in Newmarket. If you need a PROPER appraiser and not one of those gov't shlocks let me know and I'll PM you as well. I also know through my brother an excellent mechanic in the thornhill area who runs his own shop. The guy knows his way around Oldsmobiles with his eyes closed. To me very important when dealing with a car like an OLDS and to boot I'm a real greenhorn. I'd be totally lost without my brother riding shotgun

Hey Atkinsom...thanks for your post and ya I am looking for an appraiser so any help would be greatly appreciated cuz I really don't want a government guy...It's horrible that they want us to pay taxes on money we haven't even spent if the appraisal is higher than what we payed for the car.

cheers

LOL most appraisers come to the house look at the car take a few picks then ask you what you want the car to be worth.

You're probably right 66 except the one gov't recommended appraiser was a dink when he showed up. I smelled a rat and shooed him away. Freakin idiot wanted to appraise the car at some insane number. Can you say on the take...what a joke. It's like letting the fox into the hen house. Oh yes mr. customer let me advise you on appraisers we have in our listing. Oh no no mr.suck it to you in multiple ways...our friendly gov't only wants the best for you and wants to ensure that we bleed you dry because we know you paid more than you say!!! Oh yes yes the inflated appraisal ensures that we all get our kick backs LOL!!! What a crock. Ok done ranting

PS PM sent Cutlass Xombie

All this appraisal talk is perfect timing, I need to have mine done again. I guess you need to get them done every 4-5 years. Wasn't aware of this until Lant sent me a notice. I will send you a pm atkinsom.

When I had my car appraised I had two appraisals done. One was for the MTO for the taxes (they appraised it for just under what I paid but I still had to pay tax on the amount that I paid because it was higher than the appraisal) and the other was a more detailed appraisal for the insurance company with photo's etc. The second appraisal was for the actual value that the car is worth.
I think that any place that sells used cars can do the appraisal for the MTO. All they have to do is fill out a form that they have from the ministry of transportation.

welcome nice to see the cunucks around. i have 2 appraisals on my 72. ministry appraisal 25 bucks flat. insurance appraisal 250. the mto appraiser didnt even look at the car. put the price low for tax reasons. i was very pleased with my appraisal for insurance very detailed. the company i went with was dp consulting and appraisals. a little expensive but recognised by most insurance companys.
i havent checked but if there isnt there should be a buy/sell section for the canadians mabey we can avoid some costly shipping charges since nothing is made here any more.
