New member intro with 1983 5.0 problem

Alright, this is my first post to any automotive forum.

My automotive history:

I'm 19, I live in Northern California, and I currently own: 83' Olds 88 Sedan RB - 84' Olds 88 Sedan RB & a 86 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham along with my 64' Dodge D200 Custom

I've owned: 85' Olds 88 Coupe RB - 88' Olds Custom Cruiser along with: 1965 Dodge D200 Crew Cab, 1971 Ford F250 Sport Custom Camper Special

All my Oldsmobiles have rocked the massively underpowered 307. The Cutlass and the 84 Delta have the 3 spd and the 83 & 85 Delta's & the Custom Cruiser have the 4spd OD.

My 83 Delta 88 is my favorite car out of all I own, its my passion. I drove it to High school since I was 17 after I pulled it out of the weeds where it had sat for 5 years with 215k miles. I just had to have a big car for friends (and that big back seat to enjoy with my Angel).

My Dads first and only new car was his 81' Cutlass Supreme Brougham 3.8, it was highly optioned and some of my first memories involve that ride. Sadly at 450K miles (yes my Dad babied his Cutlass to 450k with its original motor!) it had a overheating problem that no shop in the area could figure out and of course it was all the way worn out. A dear family friend had the 1983 Delta, which had just been rear ended by a Ford F250 @ 45MPH (the Olds drove away, the Ford was towed to the scrapper), the family friend knew that my Dad could use the car and could repair the rear end enough to commute with, so he gave it to my Dad, when my Dad sold the Cutlass to the Pick N Pull he immediately started driving the Delta 88, which he continued to drive for the next 5 years till' he parked it in 2005. So in essence I grew up in these two cars. And that's why I chose to fix up the 83' for high school instead of my 64 Dodge Truck I had at the time.

The 1983 Delta 88 Royale Brougham I call Outlaw, now has 230k miles on the original motor (I replaced the tranny with a junkyard slushbox last summer).

Heres the problem:

When I first started driving this thang a couple years ago all I had to do was shift to first, smash that pedal deep into the carpet and voilą I created a smoke machine. But over the last year Ive been loosing power steadily to the point it was hard to keep up with the speed of traffic (were talking 25+ second 0-60s). I knew my intake manifold gasket had a leak so we checked vacuum pressure, and it was dismal at a lowly 9bls. So over the last month me and my disabled father replaced the intake manifold gasket (when we first pulled the intake manifold we were amazed to find no sludge at all, the engine looked like it has 20k miles!), the heater valve, cap, roater, plugs, wires, and other odds and ends. After we got it torqued back down we tuned the carb, set the timing to 21 degrees and replaced all vacuum lines useing the sticker that came mounted on the fan shroud as a map to route the vacuum lines. But once we fired em' back up he ran like TOTAL CRAP. (I'm running a dump exhaust with the cat strait piped and no exhaust after where the cat would of ended). The exhaust sounds like a freikin tractor now (sounded muscley before), runs rough, idles real rough, and worst of all I now got worse power than before the gasket job was started.

We have since quadruple checked every system, vacuum lines, ignition, timing, carb, everything, and everything shows up good.

We ran a compression check a few days ago and the numbers read:

Cyl 1: 175
Cyl 2: 164
Cyl 3: 168
Cyl 4: 169
Cyl 5: 170
Cyl 6: 170
Cyl 7: 174
Cyl 8: 175

We are completely stumped guys, some good "olds" school *wink* opinions would sure be appreciated!

Your friend Joe Dirt
