My first classic car. Lots to learn! Just got her on Saturday. Was able to get some time out on the road last weekend. Seemed to run really well. Has a 455 and ran relatively smoothly. Would appreciate feedback on trying to find origin of the engine as I know it was not original to this MY and was purportedly rebuilt recently. Let me know what you think and thanks for having me!

Welcome. Gotta love the 66 verts!

 

One of the ways to tell is via the oil fill tube.
There are numbers on it, the first number will be the year of the engine, ONLY if it is the original tube for the engine.
There are some numbers on a pad on the block just under the number one spark plug. Post them and info will come.
Also, if it has a cast iron intake, and there is an EGR valve or a block off plate for the EGR, you know it is at lease a '73 to '76 engine.

All 455 blocks a F blocks
You need to check the oil fill tube and the pad just below #1 spark plug on the block

 

Welcome. As Gene noted, the VIN derivative stamp on the block will tell you the year of the block. The casting code on the heads will tell you the year of the heads (if they are not original to that block). That's about all you can learn without tearing the motor down and inspecting internal parts like the cam lobes and valve sizes.
