New Guy From Chicago

Hello to all the Olds Enthusiasts out there! My name is Paul. I’ve been a gear head ever since I was a kid. I have been looking for a hot rod/cruiser for months. I have always been interested into all GM cars, mostly Chevy. My last Chevy was a 96 Impala SS. Loved it! It caught on fire back in 06. That really hurted! LOL! So I’ve done a lot of searching and came across a 1964 Olds Cutlass F85. The car is sweet! Motor and trans is not original. I was told they both came out of a 1976 cutlass. Both engine and trans has been fully rebuilt, new suspension and brakes all the way around. The body has very minimal rust. I do have a lot of work to do before it is road ready. I’m pretty excited to start this project and I am glad that there are forums like this to help me along! Looking forward to chatting with you guys!

We need some pic's of your car. Glad to see another '64. I grew up in the Chicago area, Lansing to be exact. Left for warmer weather when I was 18.

Yes, its a 64 Cutlass F85. The car was located in the Champain/Urbana area. It was a father and son project. I was told that the father got sick and couldnt work on it anymore.the car is about 60% complete. I got it for a really good price!! Infact, I was trolling thru this forum and I found my car!! I guess the son was on this site sometime ago. I will be posting pics this evening!

Thumbs up

WELCOME ABOARD!!! I'm a fellow Chicagoan -- but 'Uncle Sam' keeps me away from there as much as he can; I'm career Military but still call Chicago HOME! Have Family still there and I get back there once in awhile! Your car sounds neat! What part of the City or Burbs are ya from?? (If I come across a source for you rear bumper I'll give you a holler!) Take care and again, WELCOME to CO!

The Parts Place in Elburn, IL will probably have a rear bumper for you.
Depending on how ratty your old one is for the core charge, the cost will probably run between 4 and 600 bucks though.

Welcome. I'm from the NW Suburbs out by Schaumburg.
Grew up in Albany Park though on the North Side.

Parts Place in Elburn or
Tamraz in Plainfield for parts.

I'd try to find a stock bumper and have it blasted and chromed though.
That's how mine were done. There's allegedly a large Olds graveyard in
Indiana which is where my Uncle sourced from to get my bumpers.

I went ahead and ordered a fiberglass bumper from them! Thanks!! That should hold me until I find a real one. I also remember hitting up a junkyard in Indiana that had alot of vintage cars! we had to hop from car to car to search. I forgot the location. Do you have their address??

How did you get Bahrain ??
That was special duty for us, and I didn't even know they had OS's on that tiny base.
I always thought OS was strictly ship duty. I requested orders to Bahrain after my
last tour at sea, and the orders came in, but I ended up getting out of Active service
and came home to help my brother.

Been to
Hong Kong 4x ...I lived in the red light district every night.
Singapore 2x
South Korea 2x
Yokosuka Japan 4x
Okinawa 1x (actually left behind)
Hawaii 4x
Melbourne Australia (yes, the sea stories are true)
Canada, etc

I've been aboard the John C Stennis in 2002 when I worked for NCIS.
I took my brother to Norfolk , flashed my badge and got my brother a tour
of the ship. That ship is just so badass and modern.....It was great.
What years were you on it ?? Typically only west coast fleets go to Australia.

Bahrain was special duty.I had an NEC OS-0345... I was with IS and CTT personnel. There were two more OS personnel there, but I think the were assigned to physical security with the Master at Arms. I was on the Stennis from 2000-2003. I was there when that douche bag, Ben Affleck and the others sailed on the Stennis to premiere " Pearl Harbor " in HAWAII, watch out for girls with the high heels on the strip

We used to get into brawls with the Carl C. Vinson guys all the time at the bowling alley, when they came down from Brementon. The Vinson always pulled into port when the other carrier. I can't recall if that ship was the Kitty Hawk or Enterprise. I remember there was a NCIS guy on the Stennis for awhile. Those were the times!

yes! it was on CL. Champaign Urbana area. Ive been watching that car for 2 months. I finally called him when I save up the money. We talked for a good 45min. over the phone. He convinced me enough to take a look personally. I grabbed one of my buddys and headed south to see it. Once I saw it and started it up, I gave him the cash on the spot! LOL! I didnt have a trailer so I rented 1 from Uhaul. The reast was history!

LOL!! Yeah, I stole it from your area! The car is running very well!! Only major problems im having are leaks both front and back windows. I would like to reseal both myself because I know that I will do it the way I want. Oh, 1 more major issue, Body Bushings. all the way around. Most of them are spining on me meaning that they have seperated from the body. I havent thought about a solution to that yet. Im open to ideas. BTW, here are a few updated pics.

Thanks for the update~!!! Glad to hear it's in decent running order. IDK about the bushings except replace them with new ones? I also need to reseal my doors (wind seeps in and is noisy) and also seal the windshield because it gets moisture when it rains hard.

Body mounts are pretty easy. pick up the kit.
Loosen all the mounts bolts, both sides. Take all the bolts out one side and jack up one side enough to replace the bushings, let it down, install the bolts lose, then do the same for the other side.
Fairly easy.
