New 71 cutlass in ralley red???

I finally got my 71 cutlass supreme. This has been restored/rebuilt and the paint is obviously new and don't know how to decode the color key on the cowl tag but love this color. I looks like the same as the recent post by a 442 owner on this new member forum. I will try uploading pics

On the cowl tag there should be a PNT code (right side, second line). If your car was originally this color, the code should read 75 - which is Matador Red. The upper roof color is black vinyl which is code B. So your PNT should read 75 B

The first part of your cowl tag should read something like this:

ST 71-34257 LAN? XXXXXX (Production sequence) BODY
TR 970 (black vinyl) 75 B PNT
then there will be 2 numbers and a letter that indicates the build week.

There may be other combos on the cowl tag like A51 or A65 which indicate the type of seating.

You'll find that everyone here tries to be very helpful and participates with the best intentions. Electronic forums however do have a drawback; and that is trying to put something in words - sometimes hard to do. Also putting into words is so subject to misinterpretation. Please don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.

One thing to remember about the information though> it's given in the spirit of helpfulness and best intention. It is not an instruction for you to follow; merely suggestions. It is up to you to make the final decision based on what you think is right for your car.

This web site has a great search tool and tech section. It is not however the only source of information. You have a 71 Cutlass. May I suggest you also consider joining 'Wild About Cars"? http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/cgi-bin/myhome.cgi?p It's a free site and has a lot of great info (including Chassis Service Manual) for your ride.

Was Matador the only red? Isn't there a ralley red also which leans more toward the orange red like my car? I don't think this is the original colore although it seems well redone and hard to find a spot where the original color maybe lurking. I always forget to check the cowl tag for the paint code when I open the garage all I want to do is get in it and Gooooooo!
