Mining for chevy and struck olds
Mining for chevy and struck olds
Hello, I am a new member and just acquired a cutlass supreme. I answered an ad for a el camino for my son and went to look at the car. When I got there I learned it was a son selling cars his dad who passed had sitting around. I made a deal for the el camino. He then told me he had a few more cars in the garage, a nova, camaro, and a 68 olds with a 350. I looked at all of them and peered into the olds and saw the floors were rusty but had buckets and four speed. Being more in tune with chevy's but liking all GM muscle cars I bought it also. Later that evening i started doing research and noticed that the engine in the car was painted blue not gold, and learned it was a 455. I also thought it might not be a 68 and learned it was a 72. More research on line and found my way onto the v code registry. Using all the great info on that site, I confirmed that I bought a 72 Cutlass Supreme v code car. It is numbers matching needing restore. Pics to come soon.
...and that's what makes it a V Code instead of a U Code. ; )
Mitch, welcome to CO. I was going to recommend that you join this site, especially as you tackle the restoration. Lots of very knowledgeable guys here with loads of information (and killer OEM parts stashes).
For the guys who don't know, Mitch's car is one of 77 455 4 speed Supreme hardtops made. None were built in '70 or '71, so it's a rare machine.

So a u code was 455 only and the v code was 455 + stick?
Thanks for the correction Terry...
More pics Mitch when you get the chance...! Maybe I should go out looking for a Chev tomorrow!

Welcome, and a great story. The rims look like the wagon wheels that were popular in the late 70s.You will find out that 68-72 cutlasses by reading on here are the most desirable therefore lots of reproduction parts available.Nice find, Nick
I also noticed that original radio and uncut dash. Be glad it did not have a vinyl roof and then you would probably be looking at replacing the roof due to rust. This thing is going to be nice. What a neat car for your first Olds. This one will make a believer out of you.
Good thing is there are tons of replacement sheet metal items for the rusted areas and trim items you need to fix / replace. Nice to see it even has the dual snorkel air cleaner the MT's came with. Now it would be super nice if you dropped the fuel tank and found the build sheet. You might also find several of the broadcast cards under seats or carpet etc that show the cars provenance.
Any chance it still has its original docs including protecto plate?
What plant was this car built at?

Fremont plant. Looked under carpet, door panels, package tray, seats, nothing yet. Have not pulled tank down yet. No protecto plate. I need to look a little better throughout the car, did a quick check.
Man that is a cool car! I have a '72 U code supreme that I wish was a 4 speed.
Fold the front seats forward, & remove the seat backs. Three screws at the bottom edge & two under the "chrome" release button in the upper back. I found a broadcast card in the springs of the driver seat in my '72 U code supreme.

Fremont cars usually have full 8.5 x 11 build sheets, and your best bet is under the package tray on a Supreme. Mitch, I know you said you already checked there.
Scott, I've said it before, but your U Code is a great car. : )
