Mileage indicator

I have a 72 Cutlass and was told when the mileage indicator goes over 100,000 miles , one of the number on the indicator drops lower then the others. is this true ? Thanks

As noted, this is an urban myth. I've personally disassembled and reset the odometers in many 1960s Oldsmobiles (I often set them to 00000 when I completely rebuild one of my cars). There is no mechanism inside the odometer that would purposely cause one of the numbers to drop down. Now, I will say that due to age and sticking of the various drum wheels, sometimes at high mileage the odometer numerals won't necessarily line up perfectly. This is due to friction, not any overt mechanism.
