Looking at 67 Olds Cutlass

I have found a 67 Olds Cutlass that I am considering getting what do you guys think of it. He wants $1750 for it. Here are some pics he sent me. I also have found another 67 Cutlass that is local to me that I was thinking of using as a parts car.

Unless I'm missing something that doesn't look much better than a parts car.
$750-1000 imo

He says he has the build sheet for it just gots to find it again. He says it is a 442 which if it is, is the reason why I am interested in saving it.

You would be light years ahead buying a $10,000 complete solid car needing restoration.

Possibly however I have access to another 67 that the roof is good on and I don't mind the least about taking a sawzall to the roof and welding it onto the 442 if that is what it is.

Depends on what is good on it....doors solid? Posi rear with boxed control arms and anti-sway bar? Solid quarters? Any fenders or bumpers? Parts are worth something....maybe 750? Ya have to add up whats good, evaluate worth, and make offer.

I think cutting the roof off and welding a new one in would work to save it. Me personally I don't think it is to far gone. It doesn't seem to be rusty which I am quite thankfull for living in the pacific northwest.

Wow, you are either very young, very stupid or very good. Most anything can be brought back but is it worth it? Where is the rest of the car and 400 engine? How about trans etc etc etc?? When you cut the roof everything will go out of alignment without proper bracing, its a job for a professional in my opinion. Looks like passenger door is damaged as well as its a post car.... The car is a parts car and not a fixer by what I am seeing.

I like to challenge myself and see what I can do. It is missing engine, trans, buckets, and the console. I would brace it up from door to door then right along where the factory quarter panel seam is. What I need to find is where the factory spot welded and leaded the seams over so I can take the roof off in one piece.

Ok, I like a challenge too and give credit for that. I hope you have deep pockets because this one will be costly. Dont tell us you will be putting a chevy engine in there.... If ya are going for originality and its a 442 you will be paying dearly for mechanicals......Good Luck.

Nope no chevy going in there. If I can find one a 400 will be going in and what ever 4 speed came out of the car. I personally think the person that ordered it so it could be drag raced. I came to that conclusion because it is a post car, it also is supposed to have 3.90's in the rear end.

Have you done that type of work before? The roof skin is the easy part. You also have to deal with all of the braces, rails ect. Its not that it can't be done but with no parts that make it a 442 then You are under water at just about anything above scrap price.

Watch what this car ends up going for to give you an idea of what a decent project is worth then compare to the pile you are looking at.

Thankfully there is a 67 442 in one of the wrecking yards near me so I can take what I need from that one. I will keep an eye on that 66 though. It will give me a good idea what things are going for now. Thanks for the link

How do you know it was a special order car? Post cars were available on the lots too and did not need special prder. Do not believe anything a seller may tell you. Check things out yourself before assume-ing things or counting on a 390 gear. Maybe its not really a 442? Anyone ordering a car for racing would have probably opted for radio/heater delete and most likely bench seat, no power brakes or anything.

Hans... I know the car Dans in Kenniwick.... honestly not worth it since the tree fell on it 3 years ago... he has 2 other post cars theres a Turquoise 66 thats a runner for 3500 and also a Silver 67 F85 for 1500 or 1800.....

you would also need to find a post coupe roof with bracing for the B pillars

Well it has manual brakes on it that I can see from the pictures. I am thinking about seeing what the lowest he is willing to take for it. It all really depends on if he can find the build sheet for it. If he can find the build sheet and it says it is a 442 is the only reason I am thinking of saving it. I had a 1967 Olds Delta Custom that was painted the same color as this Cutlass which is what caught my eye.

From what I can tell, the first pic is of the car before the tree fell. The rest look like a huge amount of work. You will have to completely tear it down to bare bones and start from the bottom and work your way up. I hope he has the rest of the car. Bumpers fenders, hood, rad support.
How is the '68 Cutlass in the back round, maybe that would be a better project.

Tell him you will do him a favor by taking the $250 parts car off his hands...that is all the car is worth in price and purpose. If the frame has been sitting on the ground for a few years, which is seems to have been, there will be nothing but rot for the frame and floor boards.

Yeah I know I am going to have to figure out how GM originally put the car together. What I am thinking is getting the roof from another post car where it has been cut off about even with the top of the dash so I can look at how GM originally attached the quarter panels and a pillars to the roof the do the reverse on the wrecked roof. The possibility of rust in the car is why I plan to make a trip out of it. My dad lives in central Washington I figured go visit him and the go visit my Grandparents in Richland on the way back and I can check the car out more thoroughly when I am down in that area.

Serioulsy, good luck if you take that on.

You will learn a lot in every aspect while you go through the process. I am doing a car that 99.99% would have scrapped. It is good and rewarding experience even if it does not turn out.

Knowledge is good.

Mate have a real good look around before diving into that project. I still check out 67s on most websites and there are quite a few reasonably priced cars out there, even 442s which are drivers so at least you can have a little fun while you're restoring it. The last pic is probably the only thing worth money.

based on the door panel and seat upholstry it is a sports coupe like my car not a 442 i would avoid that car like the plague unless you can get it real cheap like 100-250 tops if the body and some standard suspension parts just my .02 cents

Go take a chain and flog yourself. It will be less painful. Only if this were some kind of one off car (maybe the original Hairy Olds) would it be worth restoring.
