Intro for myself and 1966 Delta 88 Celebrity

Afternoon, all.

Thought I'd introduce myself. This is my '66 Delta 88 Celebrity. My great-grandfather bought her new in Ohio. When he passed, my grandfather drove her to Phoenix. When he passed, my father took care of her before giving her to me a few years back (father is still alive but has no room for her). I didn't have the time or cash to get her cleaned up and road worthy then but I'm making the effort now.. what, with the pandemic and all.

Current projects are brand new suspension, brakes, ignition coil, and carb rebuild. That first pic is when I had picked her up from my father's place. She sat (under a car cover) for a good while here in Phoenix. Hence, all the necessary fixes.

Future projects are headliner replacement, trim work, all weather stripping replacement, paint job and light body work, and power windows fix.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the finished product when I can take my dad and sister on a cruise of Route 66 (as she's a '66).

Thanks for all the great insight you all contribute here. Best of luck with all of your projects!

Welcome. Love, love the 66 Delta 4 door. In fact that may need to be my next acquisition. Good luck with all that work. She'll be a beauty.

Cool car! Looking at the air cleaner I don't think it should be black from the factory because in 1966 to my knowledge there was no 4bbl low compression engine option on the 425. Oldsmobile had an orange air cleaner on the higher compression engines in 1966 and the 2bbl low compression engine did have the black air cleaner. Also the air intake snout appears to be the long one found on the 425 Starfire 375HP engine. Does your car have dual exhaust? The pie plate is correct though for a 4bbl 1966 425 engine. Just curious. Maybe the breather was painted black along with the valve covers, they should be reddish orange as well. Good luck with the project.

There was a 2-bbl low compression version that did come with a black air cleaner. The color of the air cleaner was based on the compression level, not the number of carburetor barrels. All low-compression V-8s came with a 2-bbl carb. Some of the high-compression V-8s did as well.

See the page below out of the '66 Olds Prestige Brochure. I've highlighted the relevant entry. The low-compression 425 was a no cost option on the Delta and Dynamic 88s. The high-compression 2-bbl was the standard engine. Whoever bought this car originally wanted to save money on gas, so he went with the regular fuel, low-compression version of the 425.

Yep I think I covered the 2bbl LC 425 in my post, what I was referring to is a 4bbl LC 425 in 1966, not produced while it was in 67.

Yes, but your original comment said that the black air cleaner is not correct. That's not true. You could get a version of the 425 on the Delta 88 in 1966 that would have come with a black air cleaner. It was low-compression and would have a two-bbl carb. The OP never said the car has a 4-bbl carb.

What is true is that the 425 wears a 4bbl air cleaner and what is also true is that its black and no 66's came from the factory with a 4bbl LC so the black 4bbl air cleaner is not correct. This is what I thought I said, and what I am saying. I also said there was a 2bbl version LC 425 with a black air cleaner.

Just so you know, in ‘66 Olds put the wiper washer fluid reservoir behind the battery on the drivers side. Fusick may have a reproduction one.

If the car runs hot, you might want to remake the rubber parts that go in front of the radiator that force airflow through the radiator core. I can also recommend a 6 or 7 blade fan and fan shroud.

Olds only made one shroud in ‘66 and it doesn’t cover the entire back of the big car radiators. So you can get a Cutlass one and it should bolt right up. I went out of my way to zip tie the drivers side of a Toronado shroud to the ‘66 Olds shroud to get full big car coverage. Works great, but I don’t want to assume you can easily access late 60’s Toronado shrouds at, say, Autozone...

Cheers
Chris

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

It's definitely been a patience-trying process working on this. At first I thought maybe I was just looking at replacing some shocks and springs but it's turned into a whole front end replacement. Which is fine. But if anything can go wrong, it has. I'm waiting on a suspension kit from Ebay that I'm really hoping is going to have the correct parts. I had to specify if it was Saginaw or TRW steering. The Pitman arm had the signature "S" stamped on it so I went with Saginaw. However, after cleaning up the upper ball joints, I saw a "TRW" stamp. I've been told they won't work together so I guess I'll find out when that kit shows up.

I'm also dealing with a carb leak and the engine not turning over.

Thanks again for the welcome and I'm almost guaranteed to create quite a few posts here asking for help and advice.

You'll be OK . The only components that have to match , brand-wise , are steering components .
The ball joint brand doesn't matter .

The mounting holes on mine have broken so a replacement is definitely necessary. I checked Fusick to no avail. :-/
