Just thought I'd say hi. I'm new to this place but I've owned my 72 cutlass s 442 for 35 years. Its a 455 , 4 speed car. For years I thought I was the only Olds freak out there.Talk to you all later.

Was your 72 a factory 455/4spd? If it is you have a really rare car. Like Pat said, Pics please. And you're not alone, there are lots of us "Olds freaks" out there. Isn't it nice to find a bunch who share the same interests?

Yes it is a factory 455 ,4speed car. I bought the car when I was 17, now I am 53. It still has the original 455 and the original M21 4speed. It has the W29 package. Nordic Blue with a white vynil top,white strato buckets.Not as nice as it was when I bought it in 1977 but I'm working on getting it back in shape. Oh and I have the build sheet for it too. The build sheet confirms everything on it. It was only 5 years old when I bought it and had 59000 miles on it, so I'v never doubted what the car was.I'll get pictures as soon as I can

 

So the car was not Lansing built if you have the build sheet, and is a U code VIN? Build sheet, or Broadcast card?

You have a really nice history going back with that car. Looking forward to the pics.

VIN should look something like this unless you have a post car: 3G87U2(R,Z,G)XXXXXX

 

Its an Arlington built car.It is a build sheet and I just looked at it and I was mistaken ,it is an M20 4 speed. I've done alot of looking online with my cowl tag and vin number and it appears there weren't very many built like this one.???

If the VIN has a "V", that confirms 455 four-speed which like you said is pretty rare. I think they also came with a dual-snorkel air cleaner. Nice!

 

Joe, good catch on that. One of my reference books says that only 1121 W29 72 coupes were built with the M20 4 speed that year. Including verts the book suggests that only 1252 Cutlass A bodies got the 4 speed that year.

 

Well I put a picture of my car in my album , but can't figure out how to get it in a thread. Computer illiterate! This picture is the only one I have on my computer. Its from a while back. The car isn't quite this shiny now but still looks good. I ordered an interior kit for it today!!! I'll get some more recent photos soon.

 

Yes ,it came with the dual-snorkel air cleaner but guess what the 17 year old kid did with that back in "77". Just had to have a chrome air breather back then. Who new!! I guess I'm just lucky to have the car at all after 35 years.

You can put what you feel comfortable with. Your VIN shows a Cutlass Sports Coupe that would have come off the Arlington production as a 4 speed 455. That's right out of the 1972 Chassis Service Manual.

That puts your car as 1 of 9845 W29 cars produced in 72.
7313 of them were Automatic Trans,
1121 were 4 speed coupes and
240 were 3 speed.

A total of 1171 CS verts were produced as W29's. Of these
15 were 3 speed,
131 were 4 speed and
1025 were automatic.

If your car had been produced as a W30, it would have an X engine, built at Lansing and would be even more rare: only 289 4speed coupes were produced in that model. Total production of 1972 W30 (verts and coupes) was 772

Either way you slice the pie, you have a fairly rare (based on lower production) car.

Can you post a pic of the cowl tag and build sheet? I would love to see how the Olds Build sheet is laid out. You can't get repro's of them and most of the ones that show up are really hard to see full details.
