Hi I just got a 1972 cutlas holiday coupe sat for 3 yrs but starts and runs with the 350 rocket 4bbl and headers and cherry bombs right off the headers Just wonder if you have any tips for me

I'd suggest you make sure the brake system is in good condition and anything suspension related is safe. You could now change your fluids, coolant,oil and look for things that leak. Give the vacuum hoses a good look at too.

How soon do you expect to get a driver license?

 

Welcome aboard and congrats on your purchase I would suggest going through it and changing all fluids, hoses and belts for a good start and maybe looking into buying some new tires.

So far I have bought a new interstate battery that I put in today I also bought 4 quarts of valvoline and one quart Lucas oil stabilizer and a new oil filter that I will be putting in Sunday.i will also post some pictures Sunday unless you guys know how post them from a smart phone

 

That funny you said that because my 3 year old nephew wanted me to start it for him and when It started he jumped because it was so loud lol

Welcome to CO Archer! You have a great car to learn on. When I was 16, I bought a very used and rusted 68 Impala SS. It's the car that I learned on, very basic and simple. I would also recommend getting a chassis service manual. Great tool for explaining procedures on how to repair many items on your car. You can usually find them on ebay.

For pictures, I use Photobucket and my andriod automatically uploads my images into my account. I then copy the link and post it by using the picture icon. Easy peasy.

Welcome, looks like a solid start for a 1st car.

 

Invest in a good impact....at least 700ft lbs....then start taking stuff apart...but these fellas are right. Check the brakes, wheel bearings, u-joints, bushings. And don't nickel and dime the car...save money and finish one complete part at a time, one headache at a time...haha

 

Looks pretty sweet man. I'm hoping to find my first Olds soon.

Sweet first car....I agree with all above get the mechanics checked first.

 

I would drain and drop the fuel tank, and then take it over to a radiator shop to get it cleaned before running it a lot if it had varnished fuel in it. Then move on to the safety items next.

 

Yea check the brakes lines definitely especially you parking brake. Sometimes the parking brake will get rusty and when you set it it won't come undone lol its a pain to mover after that but welcome I'm also 16 and working on my first olds

 

I'm planing to replace the front drum shoes some time this week it shouldn't be that hard because my last car I had (1952 dodge wayfarer) I replaced the drum brakes 3 weeks ago. I traded the dodge for the cutlass

 

Quick question my cutlass has a HEI coil in the distributer cap is this factory or is it just a HEI coil and distributor cap that some one has put on. I don't know if you can see it in this pic http://i835.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps76735f96.jpg

Welcome to CO, Archer! Good lookin' 1st Oldsmobile! Getting the Whoa factors correct should be the absolute 1st step in the process. Enjoy!

 

Good advice as well. My mechanic recommended doing that with my 59 Edsel due to the fact it had sat for 8 years in a garage. I drained the old fuel out and dropped the tank. While flushing it out I found many pin holes in the tank where the strap had been rubbing on both sides. I tack welded the holes best I could and had the tank relined. It would have sucked the first full tank to have gas squirting out the back.....

 

As for the gas tank I do believe that is was drained and he only put some into it to move it every time he mowed.thats probly the reason why it starts on the 2nd or 3rd crank

That's how I did my car's exhaust. I don't find it loud. Although that might have something to do with being half deaf from playing music in bands for many years.
