I just traded my restored 79 gold T/A for this original condition 72 442 last Friday night. The 442 has 80,000 original miles with it's original interior, and one repaint in 94. Love the car and it's gold.

It's a very nice looking car overall. Something to note and I'm sure you're aware. Most likely this is a clone.
The 442 numbers on the front fender are so far out of whack, it leaps out as being wrong, and there are no 442 numbers on the deck lid.
I love the rear cutout bumper, but that was only standard on the 455 W30's. You could buy them from dealers and install them. The only person who is going to down grade the car for that would be a judge at a car show. Is the hood an original W25 or is it an aftermarket?
Nice - it has a dual gate shifter.
If the car has the original interior, I'd search for the build sheet or broadcast cards. As you know Lansing cars will not have a build sheet, but the other factories may have left them in. That would be a great find to document your car!

Very nice history of the car. Does the VIN start as 3G87 or 3F87?
If you decide to relocate the emblems (which means you'll need to re-finish the fenders for sure) the piercing locations are shown in the 72 Assembly Manual. The trunk numbers are slightly smaller than the side ones and use barrel clips to mount.

Why did you locate them in that spot?

But
But the W-29 package ommited that trim regardless if it was a 1971 or a 1972 model did it not? I think the trunk lid has been changed from original when the car was painted.

Now that I know it's a 3G87 - that's a Cutlass S and the deck would have been outfitted with just the reveal moldings. So either someone did change the deck, or they added that brushed steel plate.
You're right about the trim I think. The standard W29 package also includes deck striping , which can't be put in place with that trim and 442 numerals

There was no W29 package in 71. It was an option on Cutlass, and Cutlass S and Cutlass Supreme 2 door models only for 72.

The focus of my post was that the trim on the trunk is wrong for a 442 in either year. So as you pointed out it was added to the original or the trunk lid on which it was standard was swapped onto the car when it was painted. Had it been added to the original trunk lid the holes would be present for the 442 badges so I am sticking with my original theory that it is a swapped trunk lid.
Regardless this is a nice car. Perhaps a touch hasty with the 442 badge placement but a very nice ride none the less. Enjoy it.

Thank you. You've got a nice one there too. Best of luck with it.
Most "new" old cars will have their share of gremlins to work out but everyone here, myself included, will be more than happy to help you with them.
I hope you've taken the critiques that have been mentioned as I believe they were intended, with nothing but the best of intentions to help a new Olds owner learn about their car.
Have fun with it!

Yep it looks like they are correct. My 71 Cutlass has the holes still in the truck for that trim that were half assed covered with bondo so they could put the pin striping on.
So when I eventually repaint the car I will reinstall the trim as I like it. The car is beautiful but the TA must have been nice too. I miss my 79 WS6 400/4spd and actually am trying to locate it to repurchase if available.

I have a '72 "U" code "S" model post 442 in that color sheme. I have always been a fan of the Gold and Earth Tone colors from the '60s and '70s. Now I can kinda get an idea of what mine would look like with Cragar SS wheels.

I put the stock wheels back on, now it's time to find some new shoes for them. I also ditched the manual brakes after 40 years and purchased a new brake booster and master cylinder. Amazing how much easier it is to stop these days.
