Help from milton fl

New here and not sure where I should be asking this but I need help.

I went to buy a 67 442 yesterday and it was junk for the money. I am now looking at a 66 442 but it has no paper work . I do not want a clone . He says the car has a V code and that that means it is a 400 motor and they only put them in the 442's . can any one tell how to make sure It is a true 442 without the paper work. . Also if anyone knows of a really nice 66/67 442 I am looking to buy one . Thanks again. Ray

Unless the car was built in the Fremont, CA assembly plant, the cowl tag will have a 5V or 5VY in the lower LH field. See this photo as an example. Fremont unfortunately did not use the 5V marking on 442s.

Body tag and body, correct, as above.

ENGINE should be an E block [above timing cavity, fwd of intake]
B heads [large ID on the corner]
front of RH head will be stamped [not cast as many erroneously refer to as "stamped"]
V101123G I believe
Starts with V, ends with G, the 101123 in between is obviously my contrived Engine Unit Number- your 6 digits will vary and would match the info as shown on the Protecto-Plate.

I imagine that's what the seller meant by a "V engine" but who knows.

Hie thee anon to Wildaboutcars.com and examine the first few pages of the 1966 Chassis Service manual... it will show what should be stamped into the head of a 1966 F85 with the 400 engine.

Hi I have a 67 real 442 for sale, it needs a total restoration. It runs, I put a new master cylinder on it and 4 new brake cylinders. It has an incorrect 455 motor, auto trans. Im not sure what condition the trans is in. It has a 3.08 open rearend. As I said it needs a complete restoration. Its not the one in my avatar, Its Saffron yellow with black bucket seat interior. Floor shift auto.

As said the body trim tag should have 5v or 5vy to verify a 442 except for the California cars. As said also the engine should be an E block with B letter heads for 66 and for 67 C letter heads. The E block is getting scarce so be sure that is the engine in the car before you purchase if that is what you desire.
