yes...i am a newbie. but only to this site, not to oldsmobiles!! this car was handed down to me from my grandfather in 1997 (i know...lucky) and from the first day i had it, starting ripping things apart. i never thought the car would look like it does now...ever!! still to this day, i don't know where i got the $18,000 i have dumped into it so far, but somehow, i have pulled it off. year after year, spending what i could, doing one thing at a time. i recall one summer when i had just dropped the freshly rebuilt motor/trans in....car was fully primed-no doors, trunk, hood, interior, or lights. just the body, drivetrain, and me sitting on a milk crate burning tire up & down my street. but here it is now, details are listed in my signature. it's been registered since last year, after its 11 year vacation, turning heads and acquiring compliments ever since. to all those who saw this pile of metal in pieces in the past...lookie lookie what i got!!

i was told by someone in my area about the oca nationals in sturbridge. i am thinking about making the trip. honestly, the furthest i have ventured with this car is bristol, RI...which is about a half hour from where i keep the car. needless to say, i am still hesitant about long distance trips. but the car has run solid with no problems (knock on wood) so i think this summer i am going to be stretching her legs a bit more. hope i can make it and meet some people.

But i thought i would add a few more details....

When this car was given to me, it was a cream/yellow color with tan interior & tan convertible top. So the color you see now was a complete color change. All the door jams were cleaned up and painted, along with every piece of weather stripping being replaced. You cannot find a piece of metal with the original color still in tact. So yes, gramps did have good taste, but i put my own touch on it!!

There is 2 reasons i changed to the blue color scheme...one-it is my favorite color...two-my grandfather had a cadillac coupe de ville for the longest time, which was his most favorite car he ever owned. That car was light sapphire metallic blue with a navy blue vinyl hard top. So i transferred that look to the cutlass which he handed down to me as a dedication to him. So there is some meaning behind the color change. I'm not one of those guys that would change the original color just for the hell of it. I understand keeping cars original is a plus as far as value & integrity. But honestly...the original colors were ugly, and i want to drive a car that is appealling to me, which is what i now have.

By the way, my grandfather is still alive. He was one of those people who looked at the pile of parts in my basement and the car ripped down to just the frame and body and said "that car will never run again!!" maybe it was his way of keeping my enthusiasm going. But now he is very appreciative of the work i put into it and admits that it would never look like it does now if he still had it. A few years back he acquired a 1968 mustang fastback gt-a, which is a very rare model. So he now has his own antique car to cruise around in with me!! And no...neither of these cars are for sale!!!

When times were tough for us 5-6 years ago I had to sell the 1949 Ford left to me by my great-grandfather 40 years ago. Saw a patient in the office last week who is apparently dating the guy I sold it to[I forgot who he was] , and he is trying to sell it. Gave him a call and am buying it back from him!I hope to be able to hand it off to MY son , along with my '69 442...."All in the Family"

 

Beautiful, and thumbs up on the color combo! Like someone said, it's nice to see another '65(Scotty)......don't be scared about the trip to Sturbridge. I drove my all original '65 Vista with 62,000 original mi. 8 hrs to Seven Springs for last years Nats w/ a wife, 2 kids and luggage! Just pack a bunch of tools! On the way back, it had much more in it with brake boosters, air cleaners, a fender and a rear boxed arm set w/sway bar! We will by making the trip again this year......hopefully, we'll see you there! Welcome to the site!

 

Great looking car....I changed a color, sienna brown 1971 cutlass convertible that I swapped over to a !971 442 W-30 with a stunning viking blue with white stripes and white interior. It also had every panel removed and painted and there is not 1 spot of sienna to be found anywhere. But for what the paint job cost is would have been unacceptable. I love an Olds with view and a soft rumble, you have a nice setup there, cherish your Olds there aren't that many of them left out there. I have a his and hers setup. You can guess which one is my wifes wedding present. Good luck with the car. Oldsdroptop
