Smile Greetings to all from Des Moines

Hi folks, Skutch here making my newbie post. Been working on my '68 442 and thought I'd better connect with some folks that have walked the walk.
The car is a 1968 442 convertable according to the VIN but the motor doesn't match the car. The block has 389244 D stamped on the shelf above the water pump by the oil sending unit and as I understand it should be a '66-'67 425 cu. big block.
I'm currently replacing the clutch but there's a catch. It had a Borg Warner T-5 manual 5 speed in it when purchased. The tranny is in the '83 camaro/firebird family and has worked well for about 12 yrs.
I'd like to find some more info on the 425 and the original service manual for the car doesn't cover it that I can find.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for helping to provide such a great resource for people that enjoy classic iron and the challenge of keeping it alive.

Welcome. The G-block 400 motor used in the 1968-69 442s was not one of Oldsmobile's better designs. It's not uncommon for one to have been replaced, usually with a 455 but the 425 is externally identical. The 425 is serviced exactly the same as the 455 in your CSM. The only substantive differences will be the stroke (3.980" vs. 4.250") and the bolt pattern on the crank flange and flywheel. The 1964-67 motors used a different crank flange bolt pattern than the 1968-1990 motors, so the flywheel/flexplate needs to match. I'm surprised the T5 has lasted this long.
