Forever Olds
Well...this is my first post EVER, anywhere. Thanks to all the moderators and site builders for making this web site available. It is truely amazing. I am in search of my 2nd Olds Cutlass (maybe a 70, 71 this time around) and hope to restore one in the coming years. You just can't beat that Cutlass...and those Fisher bodies! My first one cost $800, an "S", baby blue(or at least that what color I called it), dark blue vinyl roof, 69K milesand hail dents from frnot to back...oh well. Rebuilt the carb, went through two water pumps(the lady down the street from me went through "4" on her's????-whats up with that?-one of you guys/gals out there will know why), new value cover gaskets, and then....it got totaled by a Toyota at 96K miles and still was not burning any major oil or leaking! They didn't fix bent frames back in 1984.
Anyways, can someone sent me profile pictures(maybe factory illustrations) of the 1970, 1971 and 1972 Cutlass, and other views/angles if possible so I can see the body style differences? I searched the Web and never found any...The guy at the GM Heritage site said he could find them for $50/hour, if he could find them at all..I don't think so! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and look forward to the Site!

I'm a relative newbie myself,so I would suggest you get in your 5 posts [ just say hello a few times, and tell us more about your Oldsmobile "hopes and dreams". Then you can post to specific Forums, and ask all your Q's. DO check out the Wiki forum as it has a wealth of info on all the "innards"of each Olds.I wish I could help you more, but I'm just trying to get more knowledgeable about the greatest Olds....my 69 442 post coupe!

Steve, welcome to CO. Glad you chose our site to take the first dive into internet participation. I don't think you will find much difference between the '70, '71 and '72 Cutlass body styles. At least not in the profiles. There are differences in the hood embelishments (some with fake vents, some for OAI, etc), in the headlight/grille treatment, in the taillight bumper treatments, and that's about it. You might check our gallery and see what you can find there. We have lots of members with that era Cutlass and lots of pictures to view. The thing about the water pump failure may have been incorrect water pump application after the initial failure which caused subsequent failures. There are three different lengths on the snout depending upon A/C or non A/C application, this causes incorrect belt alignment and wear on all parts involved. Did you go through belts too? Just an idea.
Not sure my 3rd post went out...anyways, thanks to all for the welcome! Dan, I have to confess, I did not replace the water pump and rebuild the carb. on the 72 Cutlass Ihad..a freind did it for me.
Derek asked about "hopes and dreams"...Well, I want to restore a 2 door Cutlass, and try to bring it back to 80-90% of its former first look. Rebuild the engine, transmission, new paint, redo front and rear end suspensions, interior, well most of it. Since I don't have the time, money, or know-how, an off-frame will not be done. Would be nice to sand blast (or something similar to that..whatever is best) the frame and chassis that is exposed and repaint it all after its cleaned. Oh, redo the engine cabin too. I have some good basic mechanic skills, can read, and access to several guys that have fixed up cars. One does body and paint work. I started reading the Chilton's "general" guide for 70-87 RWD Cutlass as a start. What other books are a must have? Please let me know so I can get them. One major problem will be "tools". Well...that's it. Please send all words of advice and encougement, as I will need it on this long quest. Thanks!
