So after 22 years my grandma finally let me bring my 1963 98 hardtop home. In 1983 my grandpa drove it into the barn and shut it off. After 32 years of sitting where should I start in attempting to fire it up? It's a 394 skyrocket. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys

 

Welcome to the site, congrats on your new project. The perk is that you know the history. The biggest problem with a car that has sat for that long is usually the fuel system and soured fuel. Post some pictures for us.

that is allot of knowledge in this forum. Just ask many would love to help. I would pull the plugs, spray each cylinder with a good penetrating oil. Do this many times over a few days. Change the oil. Do all the fuel lines as mentioned above. Drain the coolant and replace the hoses. Check all the tune up parts and wires. When you go to turn it over do it by hand first many times putting oil in the plug holes. Then graduate to the starter. Once it will turn over on it's own. Put in fresh plugs, at least file and set the points, and give it a try with fresh gas. You will have to rebuild the carb at least to clean it out. Might do that while oil soaking the cylinders for a few days. It you get it started up, I would change the oil again in a very short time. I would do valve seals you can do that with the engine in and heads on. gaskets will leak at least till they get swollen again.

Welcome aboard, you have a beautiful big Olds there. Buy a factory service manual before you start! I would add to the good advice above to drop the fuel tank for a cleaning and rust check before running any gas through it otherwise you could plug everything up. You may want to tap a small tank into the fuel line for the initial startup. I would also replace the transmission fluid and filter before running the car so you don't circulate that ancient contaminated fluid through the trans. Once you get it running I would plan on a 100% rebuild of the brake hydraulic system. Good luck!
