Bought a 1972 Vista Cruiser Wagon

I picked it up in Tucson yesterday and drove it home to L.A. with not one singles hiccup. It cost me $130 round trip to get it back here. It runs great. I was cruising 80mph most of the way here and didn’t burn any oil or other issues. I'm looking forward to learning and contributing my knowledge as a restorer and concourse judge.

My first question: What would be the best mail order place to shop for rubber seals and original type Blue cloth seat fabric and vinyl for the door panels and head liner, which are probably the first things I want to do?

Thanks, Tom

Welcome to the site. No doubt that's a cool car.

Most of those rubber parts are available from many suppliers, and parts houses. They might not have everything.

http://www.soffseal.com/store/main.aspx

http://www.steelerubber.com/restoration-parts

Only to name a few.

You could google these things and find out for your self.

Adding pictures, Ah! that's a lot of fun isn't it? No need to delete, just edit it later.

Just ad another post when you figure it out.

Nice looking car.

I like Metro Rubber, myself. I think that they, SoffSeal, and Steele are the only actual manufacturers - anybody else selling them is getting them from one of these three.

As for interiors, most agree that Legendary is by far the best, but you do get what you pay for.

Welcome to ClassicOlds.

Is there a place on the plastic protect-o-plate card that tells me the color code for the interior and the exterior paint?. Mine says 12-491, 3K66H2M196065 00004

The bench seats are woven cloth... Was that common or normally vinyl? (I guess this belongs in a separate post so other people see it too...)

That's a very cool car! Congrats!

I'm listening to Robert Plant right now. His music is also very cool.

Welcome to the site!
Great looking car and great pics as well!

Man, that music video brought back lots of memories of some of my past adventures, some in my 72 with that same song playing.

Enjoy your new ride and keep up posting on your progress!

The metal cowl tag riveted to the top left(drivers side) of your cowl under the hood gives you your interior and exterior color codes.

Thanks for the compliments. Couldn't pass up the pictures when I got gas just before the AZ/ CA border and I'm glad I started to collect some memories early on. I have a feeling this will be a long romance, just like my other two classics. I already started to source the correct vinyl for the seats, headliner and door panels (maybe the dash too). I'm a little bummed that the cool cloth seats are apparently not correct, but I'll live with Vinyl... I wonder if my Viking Blue paint is a metallic. I can't tell although I'm starting to slowly peel away the wood grain and the paint still looks pretty good underneath. BTW, the cowl plate on my car appears to be brazed on?...

Wow , that is a cool car / sunset in the picture above . That looks like a great solid car to restore along with a solid plan . I unfortunately didn't know enough about my car when I bought it and ended up with some expensive surprises along the way .... BUT you seem to be on the right path , and with that comes the warm welcome and helpful advice . Good luck with your project .

You could always have the correct blue fabric installed instead of the vinyl, a lot less sticky in warm weather.

Unfortunately, Eric already figured out that the cloth seats weren't offered on a 1972 Vista Wagon even though they look very original in my car and the cloth was sewn to the original Blue vinyl side and back pieces, which are the identical amterial to the vinyl head rests... See pictures....

I know that the fabric currently in your car is incorrect, just didn't realize that cloth was unavailable for your car.

That fabric is 80s/90s Chevy truck. Maybe cars, too. Soft and comfortable. BTW the cowl tag is riveted and then some sort of goop put over the rivets and painted over. It looks like braze but it isn't.

Nice looking Vista. Can't wait to get some time to work on mine and drive it.

Keep in mind that no one makes a complete rubber kit for the VC or any of the Olds wagons for that matter.
