'86 buck gn shifter into '68 cutlass

i am in the process of converting my '68 cutlass s to a th200-4r and was wondering if anybody has used a buick grand national shifter to do this? i have one from an '86, and it looks easy enough to bolt to the floor, but what about shifter cables? will the buick shifter cable work? does one just drill a hole in the floor for the cable? also the shifter has no detents for 2nd and 1st gears, but it looks like the detent plate is replaceable. help!

You can make just about anything fit with enough work. I once mounted a Pontiac ratchet shifter in my 68 Cutlass console. Another option to consider is that Shiftworks makes four speed automatic conversions for the stock 68 floor shifter.
