79 Toro Lover

OK mostly owned Pontiacs all my life. 75 Pontiac Grandville Converitble 455, white over black and white interior 90K owned since Jan 1976, Several GP's, an 84 Indy Fiero Pace Car and 88 DOHC 3.4 24 valve V6 Fiero GT Indy Fastback Clone and a 1998 Olds Bravada.

Been looking for something different. Thought about a super charged Riviera from the 90's or a Buick Reatta but this past week I fell in love again with the 3rd generation Toronado. I sold Oldsmobiles in the 70's-80's in the family dealership and even had one for a demo at one point. Now if all goes well in a couple of weeks I will be the 3rd owner of a 78K mile 79 Toro. Silver with maroon landau top and red leather interior. Owned for the last 31 years by one man and sold to a friend who is now returning the car to Indiana and a place in my stable. No rust, under carriage is in great condition as is the interior and chrome. Looks like new closeout panels are required and a little tlc. Has factory AM FM stereo CB radio which I had totally forgotten about.

Besides the color I think the best thing about this car is the Olds 350 V8 as I always thought the 307 was gutless.

Anyway hope the members here are helpful and exchange info well as the Fiero formu I have frequented over the years. Would enjoy hearing from other owners of 79-80 toros.

Thanks

Sounds cool!

I've been driving mine daily for 4 years. Up to 246,000 miles now and still going strong!

These cars were definitely built for crusing. I get out on the hiway, set the cruise and just glide on down the road. They handle pretty well for their size too with the fully independent suspension.

I hope you enjoy it, and if you ever have any questions I'd sure do what I can to help!

Kartmaster:

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the offer. Looking for stock red floor mats for my 79 plus I really like the steering wheel in the Caliente. Reminds me of the ones in the 442's in the 60's and 70's.

Might be a nice swap for my 79 if I can find one in red. I am told my 79 has no heat. Water control valve? Blend door?

Thanks for the welcome. Used to be a District Sales Manager for PMD in the 80's and lived in Springfield, Mo. traveled in your area a lot. See any 75 Grandville convertibles for parts?

Welcome to the forum! Yes I understand too how great those cars are. I had the sister version (85 Riviera) which I put 212k on it over 10 years. The original Olds 307 was still going strong. Good luck with getting yours, I certainly miss mine.

Love my 83 Toronado, I always get a lot of looks and thumbs up...I've had mine for three years, but grew up with Oldsmobiles around the house- my dad worked for Oldsmobile. I'd love an older Toronado, but these years are so easy to drive and use...and still pretty stylish!
