Just found this site today. Glad to be here. From what I've read there are lots of knowledgeable olds folks on this form, hopefully I can get some help on my new restoration project.

Just for starts I have finally gotten my hands on my AUNTS One owner bought new in Dallas, Texas in 1971 (1971 olds conv W31). I have been trying to buy this car from her for years. She finally called me this last summer (May) and asked if I was still interested in olds. Of course I was. Her next words nearly caused me to stroke out. She said come and get it. I said how much? She said didn't you hear what I told you!! I said come and get it. The next morning I was on my way to Little Rock with carhauler in tow. You can guess the rest of the story. Original one owner, garage kept with every piece of documentation from day one including a set of Bias ply tires that had been on the car for the last 15-20 years.

wow, did you actually pick the car up, cause if you did you have one of the rarest Oldsmobile's ever, from what I know and the documentation I have seen there were no W31s produced in 1971 and no convertible made since 1969 (only 26 produced)

71W31, I'm sure you didn't want to hear this, but it is all true.
You may want to change your forum name............sorry.

Well, since the car has a ton of documentation, it's probably possible to find out what it really is . . . provided 71W31 wasn't scared away!

words of encouragement

Thanks for the positive words. I should have done a better job doing my homework before I posted. If you asked me about a 66-67 NOVA SS I would probably have done the same.

My first Test

Well I own a 66 L79! The car has the original 327/350hp,4/5spd,3.73 posi. Super light weight car. The 67 has a slightly different headlight bezels. Their were several engine options for both cars both the most rare were the L79 models. Couldn't tell you the excat build numbers but I due know my car launches like the Space shuttle and covers alot of ground in a short amount of time. Do you own one?

So guys, is there any hope of 71W31 finding a build sheet on his car? I'm a dummy about this stuff, so I don't know if a '71 would have had one stashed somewhere. The car sounds unmolested, so if there was one to begin with I'd think it would still be there.

Well, as a car's engine must be submitted to the AMA, I am doubtful it's a W-31 since Olds never registered an engine with the specs of a W-31. Building such would be illegal.

Regarding the L79, I prefer the '66's grille, but I know they made about 6-7 of the '67s. I guess, perhaps, the engine was cancelled during the first week? Yet it was available on the Chevelle and Vette and was reinstated in the Nova in '68. The L72 427 also wasn't offered for some reason, although my understanding is because Chevy wanted to offer the L71 tripower but cancelled multiple carbs for everything but the Vette; as the L79 wasn't a multiple carb motor, I have no clue.

I'm not arguing the W31 aspect. But I'm sure he'd like to verify exactly what he has regardless.
