68 442 sway bar

Hey guys, I’m looking at a 68 442 and the sway bar is up against the differential. Is that okay? The seller says sometimes they are set that way. Thanks —Billy

When I added a rear sway from a '69 442 to my rear axle (stock LCAs w/ spacers for reinforcement), it made contact w/ the diff housing. Since then I've swapped to the SSM LCAs and the same sway bar is ~ 1/4" away from the housing. I don't think it does any harm for the sway bar to contact the housing.

Have a good look and make sure the control arms are the correct boxed type. I've seen unreinforced arms drilled for the swaybar resulting in a funky fit.

Production tolerances on these cars were not exactly "precision" in a lot of cases. You can sometimes simply loosen the four bolts holding the bar to the lower arms, reposition it, and tighten the bolts. It's also possible that the bushings in the lower control arms are worn, causing unwanted motion.

Additionally, make sure the lower control arms are actually "boxed" and someone didnt try to add/cobb a sway bar to unboxed arms. Ive seen this pre-digital age and should have taken a pic for our junkyard dogs thread.
