64 Cutlass

64 Cutlass
Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and don't have an Olds just yet. But I am going look at one next and if everything looks as described I will be the new owner of a 64 F-85. I was wondering if anyone could give me some incite as to what to look for. It is not original it has a 65 425, 2 speed trans and 10 bolt rear end. I am also looking at a 65 Buick Skylark all original with 300 4 bbl, 2 speed trans and 10 bolt rear end and factory air. Both have buckets w/console shift. Same money with the Buick in a little better condition, but not by much. The 64 Olds is my first choice but I don't know much about these cars. Car will be driven around for fun with the family, etc. Any info is greatly appreciated and I'm excited about learning more about this car / motor combo.
Thanks Guys

Go with your gut feeling.
Just look for the rust spots, like the rockers, lower 1/4 behind the rear wheels, lower front fenders. Pull up the carpet see what the floors look like. The main concern is the lower windshield and the back glass, rust is a big concern there.
For the most part the same thing on the Buick also.
The 10 bolt and the 2 speed is stock. The 425 is a great engine. Interior is no big deal, if your up to it body and paint will come as you can.
Go with what you want.

X2. I think you can go with a later model
turbo 400 short shaft and get that extra gear.
It would be really nice behind the 425.
Depending on the rearend ratio it may get
fair milage on the highway too.
Well,as fair as you can get out of a BB Olds.

Thanks for the tips. I will pull the carpet and check the rear window. I got about 50 pictures and 2 videos of this car. It's not perfect but I think I can fix the small things. Have some fun and work on it as I go. I'll try to load some pictures. The front clip looks just a shade lighter than the body. I was told it was repainted but solid metal under paint. I'm going with a magnet and will be on the car like an ant at a picnic. just to make sure there are no surprises a year or so later.

I have the Cutlass as first choice, Wife and kids like the way it looks better. I think because of the colors. I had a 65 Lark years ago and really had fun in it. But it's hard to fine speed parts for the 300's. I have never owned an Olds..yet. Plus the 425 is somewhere around 385 hp. I'll need a different rear end for sure but if I can afford the gas, it should be REALLY FUN!
Very nice 67 I like that !! The 60's had some of the best looking cars ever.

You Funny guy Dr. Jones ( Raiders of the lost Ark ) Not a chance until I look first, unless you want to drive to Nebraska ? LOL Anyway I have a sale pending and will be going next week to pick it up. I have the cash and a ride so I'm driving her home. Looks like you already have a very nice 64? You need to think like The Pres and spread the Wel..Oh I mean spread the fun. You can't hog all the nice cars for yourself. You have to let a 99 % have one too.

Well if something goofy happens and I don't buy it, I'll send you the contact info. But I would advise not holding your breath. I have been looking off and on for the a while now as I mentioned. Would you be interested in the Buick ? It looks to be in very nice numbers matching condition. Just needs a little tweak here and there but would be a nice driver as well.

Thank you Guy's for making me feel welcome. I have been out of the hobby for a very long time so I'm going to need some advice and tips when I get her home. She isn't prefect, there are a lot of little things that need fixed. A new wind shield, head liner, the trunk has some small wholes in the middle that need welded, etc. There is enough to keep me busy for a while. Again thanks for the welcome !!

Well, I drove the 64 home and tonight it's parked in the garage. I drove it 4 1/2 hours to Des Moines IA last night, than 2 hours to Omaha, NE today. It runs pretty good and seems solid enough. The family really likes the colors Fern Mist paint & DK Green Interior ( looked Black ) I'll try to post pictures as I start fixing stuff. First thing will be new window seals & front end bushings. Guess I'll be hanging around awhile.

Like has been said, the 425 is a great engine. Will respond to mod,s very nice.
May I ask what your final figure you gave for the car? pm me if you feel better about it.
Depending on your style of driving, a nice built T-350, or better yet a T-400.
A well built 200R4 if you do a lot of freeway driving .
