442 w-30 in nevada

Hello , my name is ed baba i live in lasvegas nv. I have a 1970 442 w-30. I have owned it many years and returning it to stock as i saved all parts from all the previous incarnations over the years . I have a question about a part that while repainting the firewall , i noticed a little pump that i never saw before .it was on the driverside laying behind the red plastic fender . Can anyone identify this pump and what does it do? I have never used the windshield washer as it never is dirty , but suspect it is a part of it . (sorry guys back east) thanks in advance ..................ed baba

Welcome to the forum , can you post some pics? We might get a better idea of what the pump is , and it would be nice to see your Olds .

The washer pump is normally mounted on the wiper motor, so if this thing is mounted on or near your car's inner fender, it's unlikely to be part of the washer system, unless someone installed something aftermarket.

Posting pics is not difficult, although it seems to cause some people trouble. When you're posting a message, scroll down to the "Manage Attachments" button, click on that, and go from there. Images should be in .jpg format, or one of the other formats listed, and they should be no more than 100 kB in size. If they're larger than that, there are many ways to reduce their size. I use Image Resizer for Windows. It's free and it works great.

Install the program, then right-click on an image, and one of the menu items that pops up is "Resize Pictures." There are four standard options, or you can make a custom size.

It shows you what this menu looks like right on the website where you downloaded the program.

Once the image is resized, right click on it again, choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu, and one of the pieces of info shown is how large the image is so you can see if you made it small enough to post here.

You can also resize multiple images at once. Just select as many as you want, right click, and go.

That does look like a small pump. Is there a washer pump mounted on the wiper motor? Do you have washer nozzles with hoses attached and so forth? If so, where do the hoses coming from the nozzles go? They should attach to the pump. Is there a washer fluid reservoir, is there a hose attached to that, and where does it go? It should also go to the pump.

It should take no time at all to determine if the washer system as it sits in your car now is intact regardless of whether it works or not.

Whatever it is, it certainly looks like it has been on there for a while. The fact that it attaches to a connector coming from the wiring harness suggests that it is a factory-installed thing.

Whatever it is, apparently the car runs and drives ok?

I'm going to hazard a guess that it actually IS a washer pump. With one inlet on one side and two outlets on the other side, washer pump is strongly suggested.

Also, in looking at your photos some more, even though the connector comes from the wiring harness, it doesn't look like a factory connection to the harness. With that resistor or whatever that green thing is attached to the wiring hanging out, it looks like a later addition.

You say you don't use the washer because of your wonderful weather, but you haven't told us one way or the other if what's on the car now actually works. If it doesn't, I would suspect that someone tried to cure the problem by adding this instead of replacing the pump on the wiper motor. Perhaps this was done long ago, the hoses are gone, and this pump has been left to age gracefully under the hood.

It is called a T. C. S. Solenoid. It goes on the passenger front on the intake manifold. It is for vacuum. The resister is for the radio. Mike

Shows what I know!

Kind of funny, though, that he found something that's supposed to be on the passenger side in front of the intake manifold on the driver's side behind the plastic fender.

What does it do? How should be connected?

It adjusts the advance on the distributor as the temperature of the engine raises. Someone will chime in with more technical than I have on it, I'm sure.

I'm surprised its still there, most folks took it off, the car doesn't need it but defiinately keep it. As Mike said it should mount on the passenger side mid-way of the manifold. There should be a stud sticking up. One vacuum line should go to the 3-pronged vacuum tee in the front of the manifold. I have a diagram of the set up somewhere
