1972 Cutlass Supreme - Back and running

Hey all, my name is James. New to the site, moderately knew to wrenching, but im getting after it!

My dad purchased my 72 Cutlass Supreme for me when i was 16, 12 years ago. I waa psyched. He had always shared the live for classic cars with my siblings but i was the youngest, and to say the least, my dad was sick. What was going to be or own little classic car project, turned south very quick. My father passed away from Cancer 2 years later. So this car means a great deal to me.

The Cutlass did however see a lot of great rides in my high school years though! Then time passed, around 6 years, I got married to a wonderful woman, and now we have 2 kids, soon to be three! But it's time, my son has been sparking an interest in the old dusty red car in the garage. So it's on.

First and foremost, long ago, something unknown to me had happened to the ignition, resulting in the motor not being able to fully turn over. So no fire. An old friend of my dad's helped by popping out the cylinder and showing me how to start the car with a screwdriver. Which I did for almost 5 years. So that's the project I'm on right now. I bought a new cylinder, gear sector, and rack. I took off the steering wheel and replaced all three. First 10 cranks were money, fired first time everytime. With a key, I was feeling great. Around the 11th time, I go to full crank, I hear one extra click, and I can't turn the car over now. And I can't get the key to accesory either. Not only that but it seems like there is more resistance with the actuator rod, and I can't even start it with a screwdriver. The actuator rod seems to he flowing left and right around the steering column, not sure if that is normal. I just can't get the rack to fall freely on that lip where you punch out the cylinder. Please help guys! Thanks a lor in advance!

Sorry to hear about your Dad - he had great taste to have bought a '72 Cutlass for you.

I have been hoping my son will become interested in the project sitting in my garage but so far no go.

Please post pics of your car when you get the chance. We love car pics!
