1972 442 "U" code 455 convertible

Does anyone know how many 1972 442 "U" code vin convertibles where built with a 455 engine automatic?

In process of restoring one and have the build sheet to prove it?

thank you

Chris

U VIN means 455 4bbl (L75) dual exhaust, AT only. So as Mr Joes says all of them..
But for specifics there were 1171, (4267) Supreme Converts.
15 3sp sticks,
131 4spds,
1025 Autos.
So yours is one of 1025

A lot of those 1025 automatics were 350-powered H, J, K and M code cars in 1972. Maybe ~10% of the total run of '72 Supreme convertibles were U code 455s. (I used to get asked that question a lot through my V Code site), and the percentage probably skews a bit higher than that among the W-29 442s.

Kurt had a more specific number for either the full Supreme run of hardtops and convertibles or perhaps just for the hardtops: "There were approx. 3125 U-Code Supremes, so approx 2-1/2% came with that engine." Again, the percentage probably skews higher among ragtops and especially W-29 ragtops. Not a lot were built either way.

SO basically a little over 100 1972 455 engines convertibles with the U code made correct? My car is red with the white top (original). I have the actual build sheet in perfect condition (as good as I've seen one kept).

thanks

Car going to be for sale starting Friday

This car will be for sale Friday on ebay on a 3 day no reserve listing. I'll provide a link for everyone. This has the build sheet. Anyone looking to restore a rare 72 442 convertible 455 engine with "U" code? They only made about 100 of these cars. This car is a friend of mine.

So put that reserve up nice and high now that you've discovered you have a "rare" car. GLWTS.

This gets a little complicated. The 3125 Supremes cited include the 2 dr hardtop, the 4-dr hardtop, and the converts. And that includes 4-spds, and they are not U-codes.
There is no further breakdown.
There is no way to distill anything more specific accurately. 442 production is irrelevant because they can come with other (350) engines.
The "little over 100 U-code converts" is speculative as Terry clearly says.

(There are some bits of isolated info out there like "There were 66 V-code Supreme Converts in 1972". These bits exist only because of older searches that we done when the records were still available. The aforementioned one here is from 1980.)

1972 442 "U" code 455 convertible for sale

Still, not many 72 442 converts with a matching 455 engine (auto) with the build sheet to go with the car. Should be a good auction with a no reserve price. If you know someone that wants to restore one of these cars, this is a good one to do. Checn out ebay on Friday night 7pm CST.
