1970 Cutlass...doesn't that say it all?

https://fortcollins.craigslist.org/cto/d/1970-cutlass/6392281365.html

my first car was a 1981 Delta 88 diesel and while it was no muscle car, it gave me a life long bond to Oldsmobile. So it only makes sense as I hit my must have the muscle car of my dreams mid life crisis, that the 1970 Cutlass is where it's at for me. I'd love to hear all you have to say about this car as this deal seems to good to be true. Am I crazy for considering pulling out s perfectly good 383 to make room for a BB? Is it blasphemy to consider a BBC for the economy of availability? I really just want to outrun the highwaymen, and run over the zombies when the time comes!!!

Welcome to the site, not a bad start for a play toy. Your car, your call on what to stick in it. Any BB choice will make it run well, however if your starting from scratch rebuilding an engine, costs are not that much different. There are running Olds BB's out there that can also be dropped right in.

What's the parts and aftermarket parts market like for this car?

There is a fairly abundant supply of aftermarket performance parts for a 455 and quite a bit available in our parts for sale section. In addition there are always 455's in running and core conditions available there also. You will need an adapter plate for your current setup or a BOP bolt pattern trans to upgrade.

what would be involved in putting in a 4 speed trans? Some holes in the floor for the clutch and shifter for starters. Are there other bigger obstacles?

The biggest obstacle is whether the crank is drilled for a pilot bearing. Only engines that came with a standard trans had this done stock. this can be done by your machine shop at rebuild.
