Finally purchased my first project car (1966 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Coupe)and I have been out of the game for a long time. I live in Memphis TN and looking for info on any classic car salvage yards that any of you have used or know about so I can start my search. My Vin # says I should have the 330 super rocket a previous owner swapped out 330 for a 85-90 307 grrr... any how you help is needed and appreciated

 

I am not sure that the 330 was even an option in the 66 Dynamic 88. The 425 was standard.

 

Also note that the super rocket was the BB Olds 425 in 1966 and not a 330. The 330 was the Jetfire Rocket

To have a 425 do you have any avenues for me to pursue as far as getting a 425 Junk yards or is there any companies out there selling create motors.. This has been a night mare finding any engines. I am tempted to just find a 2007 454 out of a wreck salvage and have air and all dependability from a modern drive train. What do you think.. full restore with the factory air or wrecked salvage and just make a really sweet daily driver….

 

Ok so now this post is going down hill. Some of us here are purists and want to keep their cars as they came back in the day. An Olds engine is not a Chevy engine etc. The 425 can be had quickly just do a search on Craigslist or on sites like this. Anyone can do whatever they wish with their cars. What a lot of us here would like to see is to get the 88 back to stock and find a beater to do your everyday driving in. The perfect candidate would be the vehicle mentioned that would give the engine you want and dependability. Leave the Olds for the weekend cruiser. As always just my opinion.

 

Respect your input and opinion. My frustrations got the better of me. New to this with Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Coupe is this car rare? Were there a lot of these made and not many left? Remember I am new… So I do not mean any disrespect…

 

Most of us are here to help and not bash but to stick another engine in an Olds does not go over very well on Classic Oldsmobile for the most part. The Dynamic is not rare, lots are left but demand for these boats is not that high. Parts are out there but you have to hunt. Mechanical parts are no problem. Take it slow and things will fall into place.....

 

One thing you'll find as you get into your old Oldsmobile is that the kind of production records you'd think would be available actually aren't. Broad numbers are, but, for example, how many like yours were made with a particular option or something like that is not available. Oldsmobile, when it existed, couldn't even tell you where the car was originally sold or what it's invoice price was, even if you gave them the VIN. That information wasn't formally kept until 1977.

Anyway, we can tell you that the base engine in your car was, as noted, a 425 V-8 putting out 310 hp. Slightly lower power (300 hp) and higher power (365 hp) versions were available.

Your car is called a Holiday Coupe, it had a base price of $3069, and production totaled 20,768, making it the second-least produced Dynamic 88 that year. Highest production was the 4-door post sedan (Celebrity Sedan) at 38,742. Production of the 4-door hardtop (Holiday Sedan) was 30,784, while that of the convertible was 5,540.

How many are left today can't be precisely determined. Vehicle scrappage rates given by the federal government suggest an average of about 1% of a vehicle's original production will still be on the road 25 years later, but this is a very average number. Given that, you might expect maybe around 200 of these to still be out there somewhere.

Your car's wheelbase is 123 inches, which was the same as all the other 88's (Jetstar and Delta) as well as the Starfire. It is 217 inches long and weighs 4079 lbs in base configuration.

I have a 66 Dynamic 4 door hardtop with the original 425. I'm no engine expert, but I love the torque and that olds engine sound. Especially after converting to dual exhaust, it makes me grin every time I start it up.

I say do whatever you like... it's your car. But I don't think you'd be disappointed with a 425.

 

I'm thinking that who ever put the 307 in did not use a lot of the parts off the 425. So my thought is find a complete 455 and it should bolt right in and be as close to stock as possible. Now if you can find a complete 425 even better yet. Or be on the look out for a '65 to 67 Delta of any body type, even better, for you would have everything you need for the conversion.

I was just thinking that the Dynamic 88 is a very large car to put a 307 engine in...I hope that you will pursue an Olds big block to put back in that car...It will take a little time and a lot of patience though.....but patience is a Good Virtue,so Soldier onward...
