1954 olds Fuel gauge problem

The fuel gauge on my 54 olds pegs to the full mark when the ignition is on. This happens even when I disconnect the Gray wire from the sending unit located in the trunk. Any ideas before I drop the fuel tank. I don't know if there is a short in the wiring. haven't run a test yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, John

What happens when you ground that wire, does the gauge go to E? If your feed wire had a short that would be what the gauge points to. So if you ground that wire and the gauge goes to E, your problem is related to the sender.

X2. If the fuel line has been repaired by cutting and splicing using a rubber hose you will lose your ground,Oldsmobile grounded their gauge through the fuel line. Sometimes the clamp that holds the ground wire gets corroded and also will affect the gauge..... Tedd
