Ready for the Painter
Ready for the Painter
I finally decided on a painter to do my 442, I'll try to keep this thread updated. Here's a pic after I stripped the car, I even pulled most of the interior. Along with paint, the body mounts and core support bushings will be replaced. After too much thought I'm going with bc/cc, the car was painted in '84 with single stage, which has held up remarkably well, but I want a little more bling without the model car look..
Now on to restoring and polishing everything I took off....

Not what we wanted to see.. But the rt. qtr panel was redone years ago, using a skin but didn't expect to see filler on the door.

Looking good. Mine won't be at that stage until next year. I'll enjoy seeing your progress. Do you have measurements for the side stripes? I have seen them at varying distances below the 442 numbers and some straight and some angled on the forward part of the front fender and rear quarter. Yours seem quite close to the 442 numbers. Do you know if there is a factory spec on the distance between the bottom of the 442 numbers and the top stripe? I only have found W-30 dimensions. I like the painted wheels with the poverty cap look as well.
The painter took close up pics of the stripes with a tape measure. My stripes were right on with the Assembly Manual drawings/measurements, so the stripes should be the same..
Glad you like my wheel/cap combo, there have been times when I contemplated a different wheel, but I love the look

After too much thought I'm going with bc/cc.
Man I know where you are coming from there. Between choosing the color and paint type I almost drove myself nuts......I finally just told the painter to just do it. My guy is good and doing good work but sooooooo slow. I hope your guy does a better job of meeting a time commitment. Great looking car to start with. I went with the red/white combo as well. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas to get it back.

Sampson, the work to date had taken less than 6 weeks, I'm thinking the job will be finished by mid December. I was going to have another guy do the paint, but he took a year to paint Robski's 64.
Hope they don't fly by and miss little stuff that you will notice later. Or maybe you have a straight car rust free that doesn't take to much but prep work.
The 64 had a ton of metal repair, I believe from robs post that the guy was taking long to be sure it was perfect in his eyes and from looking at it is is straight as a arrow
Looking good ! Pics hide a lot so I understand when you say it was time .

The guy Rob used does nice work IF you don't care how long it takes, I called him about my car, and he wouldn't agree to a 6 month turnaround..
The problem with new paint is that it can make other parts look like crap..I've bought upper fender extensions, complete rubber (the set I took off was 10 yrs. old) Olds script for hood, etc.
Anyone have a good vendor for the fender alignment shims? I'm looking for the plated ones..

Are you looking for the long tuning fork ones that go at the front between the fender and core support? I have a few new ones.
And yes, it is hard to stop once you get started.
I visited my 442 today with Costpenn, the body needs maybe 30 mons and it's ready for color, the other bits are ready for 320 dry and 600 wet sanding. The shop doesn't have much in the way of heat, so applying the color will have to wait, they painted a Vette using heaters in the booth.
