69 Cutlass S project lots of pictures

The car was purchased by my dad about 15 years ago came from Arkansas brought it to Michigan. He took it for a test drive and it smoked bad so he pulled the engine, then he decided he wanted to fix it and repaint it. he welded in lower quarter patches and spread some filler. That is how it sat since feb when I brought it to my barn. we are making a cutlass copy of the 69 442 he drove in school.

some pics I am doing this in stages. I painted the car 8/14.

here is how i got the car in feb.

The quarter had way too much filler in it from a old repair some spots almos 1" thick i knocked it out to less than 1/4" in the deepest spot.

sprayed some primer

Nice work and a nice grouping of pictures, you've done a great job! My 69 is slowly becoming powder blue again and I hope it is as nice as you've done when it's finished. - Steven

Carribean Turquoise, special color, or is it Tahitian Turquoise? Is this the paint listed on the cowl tag? paint code 55 is Tahitian Turquoise.

it is special order color. I have been told 69 only, I don't know the truth in this. I will snap some pics of the car I am copying tomorrow. Thanks for the compliments.

This is the car I am cloning. 69 442. dad still has 95% of the parts for it. I have a gold 68 442 After I finish the 69 cutlass. Then this 69 442 will be a pro street "hotrod" need rear rails/ quarters/floor pans/ interior. lol

IMG_20130819_080141.jpg

Here is the vin tag
IMG_20130819_080415.jpg

no 55 paint code, the paint I bought is Caribbean turquoise it matched the original paint off the 442. If anybody knows what the paint code is supposed to be please let me know. The 442 I am copying my dads cousin bought it new. then my dad bought it from him. only 2 owners.

Interesting, the "dash" indicates special order, but the "E" is neither a paint nor vinyl top code. I have 1969 GM paint code/chips, but can find nothing there amongst the other divisions. I am really curious as to what it is as far as a paint color from back then. No matter though, as it is sharp!

I am between leslie and stockbridge. I am trying to decide if the cutlass is worthy of this hood?

IMG_20130819_140938.jpg

it is the hood off of the 69 442. should I restore this hood and put it on the cutlass or wait till I do a real 442?

The "glass" hood that you have was not available until 1970, 1969 was steel only, with under bumper scoops for W cars, though the Hurst had it's own take on the steel hood, with it's unique scoop. The latch assy. will have to be changed to work with the '69, unless that was already done, as you say that it came off of the 442.

so it is a 70 hood? the 69's were all steel? that is nice to know and odd at the same time this is the original hood off the 442 in the weeds never been changed? do you think that it was late enough in 69 to have a 70 hood?

Nope, didn't happen. That hood just wasn't available in '69, and was an option on the 442, and had it's own option code "W25" which also did not appear until 1970.

Remember, it is your car, so put the glass hood on it if you want, there are many who have.

I finally remembered where the heads were stashed. of course they were bare, not just a simple valve job. I took them the machine shop for cleaning and magnaflux crack check. He pointed out the already redone guides were getting pretty wore. they are 69 #5 heads. Fingers crossed they aren't cracked.

the shop said 700$ at most to completely redo the heads, surface, new guides, new valves/springs/ locks/ retainers? sound fair of if they need everything should I search for a new set?

Pulled the engine out of the corner to blow the cobwebs off of it and oil it up. It had some rust in the top 1.5" of a couple bores. I am going to tear it down check bearings/rings/ sizes of everything. std bore is 4.057 correct? how much can you go oversize before needing new pistons? .004 ish?

Going through your pics, the hood that you have on the car with the new paint, is the correct one for a 442, it was used on other Cutlass models as well. The price for your head work is pretty good, less than I paid a few years ago. 4.057 is the stock bore, but I don't know what the tolerances are for a hone and using the stock size pistons.

The machine shop called, The heads aren't cracked. That's good, The guides may not be bad either, he used a chevy valve to check the guides. an olds valve stem is a little bit larger than a chevy, the chevy valve wasn't super loose so hopefully they will be ok. I had them order the comp xe250 complete cam kit since I needed springs/seals/ locks/retainers.
I cleaned and checked the block today, the deck height is .027 the bores mic'ed 4.056-4.058 all the way around. I am just planning on new rings and possibly bearings.
Ran the numbers through a compression calculator I should have around 8.6:1 compression. The small cam should make really good torque and 250-275 hp around 4300. Should be good for a street car.
Talked with the trans guy he said the new converter was 1400-1800 stall and the trans will be ready next week.

What do you guys think of the combination? With performer intake, 600cfm carb headers, and dual 2.5" exhaust?
