Yeah, the guy's plan was to skim coat it, why he didn't I'll never know. So I think it will have to be stripped completely down. And who knows what he did under the primer. He told me how he was replcing the quarters from the peak down & putting caps at the rear of the fenders. I checked tonight & he didn't do either.

As far as the type of paint, he said it was a 2 stage, chemical borne by Sherwin Williams. Never knew they made automotive paint.

The most common paint systems are single stage urethane, enamel, lacquer which is not used much anymore and then base coat/clear coat. Sherwin Williams does make automotive paints but they are not as common as some of the other bigger brands. I've not heard the term 2 stage used so it's hard to know what he was talking about. Take a little polishing compound on a rag and rub an area and see if the rag gets red paint on it. It it does, it's not cleared. If it doesn't it does have clear. By the looks of the very dry egde on the quarter panel by the pass door, it almost looks like he sprayed it with lacquer or maybe an enamel that dried much too quickly.

I'd consider filing a law suit in small claims court to get your money back. Get a notarized letter from a professional in the area about how poorly it was done, detail what was done wrong and what it would cost to correct it. With that documentation and lots of pictures, you should win. With that money back in your pocket, you won't feel so bad stripping off what he put on it.

wow.....

I love the car, but I agree with most comments that the paint is Bufugly in it's application.
I also think that such a poor application may now cost you more to strip and respray then originally, the original paint would sand down pretty easy , but this? it has some serious shine issues... not to mention wavier than you want it to be... it's nightmare stories like this that make me think painting my car myself isn't a bad idea....

SPRAYED?
Looks like he brushed or rollered it on.
Wow.
You should not have "rushed him" I guess
Geez..... I'd say the jury would side with you.
Unless your contract says "a paint job" and not "a nearly adequate or better paint job"

Well, it keeps getting better & better! I got to really inspecting things yesterday. guy said he had replaced the quarters from the peak moldings down, NOT! I reached underneath, behind the back wheel & literally peeled the bottom of the quarter back. Said he put replacement caps on the bottom of the fenders, you guessed it, NOT! Put in a new heater core, replaced rubber parts of brake lines on & on & on. Nothing but lies. Worst thing is that my wife is completely devastated. I should have ripped his lungs out through his nose when I has the chance. We did have a lawyer file suit today, who knows if we'll get anything out of him. The attorney does seem to be quite the bulldog on this stuff though. He said he doesn't see how a judge could rule against us. Also told us that if we win there are 3 possible outcomes. He pays us (eventually), he files bankruptcy, or he dies. I told him the 1st or the 3rd thing was fine with me as long as 1 was fast & the other slow.

I went back to the picture on your original post and can honestly say the original sable green paint looked a lot better. I sure hope this works out for you. My car is in the paint shop right now and this is making me have nightmares

any news?

I have been thinking about your plight, and a bunch of comments said to me when I tried to get my own project back on track. Don't try to swallow the elephant whole,

What if you started with one part say the hood or trunk lid, have it media blasted or chemically stripped right down to bare metal, see what you have and what can be done about it. You can spray an etching primer or am epoxy primer, it could probably be sprayed in the driveway or back yard without to many issues, try the body work yourself? It isn't rocket science, its patience and determination,

Then tackle another piece, eventually you will be down to the rear quarters which you say need to be redone ( where I am in my own project then decide what you want to do.

Maybe farm out that portion. Or see if the quarters can be patched. They do not make replacement quarters for a very the goodmatk quarters need to be adapted I don't know your welding skills or equipment but for pieces worse scenario is a gallon or two of stripper a couple of saw horses and some scrapers putty knife, an electric sander and some decent grit will work wonders. Whatever just don't quit take a bite at a time chew slowly and take another bite eventually all that's left is the earz and ohhh never mind lol

Things look darkest just before dawn

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I did have a reputable restoration shop owner come to look at the car, Of course he said it was the worst excuse for body & paint work that he's seen in 20 years of doing this. He does want to help & is going to give us an estimate for stripping it down & starting from scratch. He's willing to work with me & let me do as much teardown & such as possible to save some shop hours. At least it's a beginning. I'll keep you posted.

Working on the Cutlass again

It's been a while since I've gotten on the forum. I was so disgusted with what had happened to the Cutlass I just didn't deal with it for a while. To update, I have found someone to paint the car locally. Turns out that one of my brother Fire Fighters & his son do some body work out of his radiator shop! We took the doors, hood, trunk deck & fenders to get them dipped. I've been taking those to them as they get stripped & have pulled the engine & started fixing the mechanical stuff that the last guy screwed up. As soon as I get caught up a little bit I'll post some pics. Now for the dilemma, I need patch panels for both fenders & all of the suppliers that I've called are out. The new painters are working through the parts I brought them quicker than they thought, so I need the patches to keep them going. I tried Brothers, OPGI, Year One. If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it!
Thanks, Mike

My body man dealt with them...maybe they would have some..

Here is what the parts looked like after being dipped. No skim coat when the idiot painted it, only a light coat of primer. I think he used a 4" grinder to take off the old paint, along with several layers of metal!

Your hood and deck lid look very nice and I think you found a shop that will do the job you want. Can't wait to see the rest of the parts painted and the car back together.

We all go through these issues from time to time. And those who have not are very very fortunate.

I am repairing all of the issues on the 442 I bought last year. Boy, I had know idea of just how messed up it really was. But I won't bother you with the details.

As we say here in the Army, "Stay in the fight", which is another way of saying, Don't give up", and get that car completed.

Good Luck!

Getting there!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been busy trying to get replacement parts that we keep finding out that the methhead didn't return. Here are the latest photos on progress. The rest of the sheet metal should be going on in the next couple of days! I'll be SO glad to get past this.

Thanks guys. I'm still in the pissed off, frustrated stage right now. Going through boxes & finding out that the meth head didn't give us back (read stole) so many hard to get parts. Thousands & thousands of $$ down the drain. It is looking great now though. We still have a ton of work to do, but it should be ready in plenty of time for the Olds Nationals at the end of July!

Parts

OK, some more parts that are missing from the jack leg that worked on the car:
The piece that goes from the outside door lock to the lock mechanism, for lack of the proper term kinda like a link?
The lower windshield molding, the reveal molding that covers the back of the cowl & the wipers, remember this is a convertible.
Any help would be much appreciated,
Thanks, Mike

All of the sheet metal is hung! Still needs some adjusting. Shot of the new wheels & tires also.
