Small projects on the Automatic Jetfire

We stopped driving this car year before last because I needed to do some work to it and didn't have the time with building the 442. We took it out for a 40 mile drive this past summer but that was all. I put the 4 speed Jetfire project on hold so I could have this done on time for Spring driving.

I have several projects planed. One is to install the red turbo. I am pulling the silver one and will install it on the 4 speed car at a later date. Also plan to change the radiator hoses with the new reproductions that Fusick is making for these cars. Then to the brakes, I need to rebuild the wheel cylinders because I have one on the front sticking. I am going to rebuild all 4 of them. Repack or replace the front wheel bearings. And rebuild the differential. The differential is going to be an issue.

Started today with pulling the Turbo and draining the antifreeze.

Got some more work done. I decided not to get everything recolored and just rebuild the parts. Looks like I can keep my old system intact and not rob parts off of it. I will later rebuild the 4 speed carb and parts and put on the silver turbo. I have a couple more hours in this red setup and it will be ready to go back on the car.

I pulled the rear end apart this morning. This is a problem that I have known about for a long time and stopped driving the car last year because of it. The spider gears have eaten into the case. I am still looking for a replacement case but till then I added shims to this one to get me by. I had to add .090 of shims to each side. I did not replace any of the bearings at this time. I will do that when I find another case. The bearings all looked to be fine anyway. One axle bearing is a little stiffer to turn than the other but still very smooth. Also used Lucas 85w-140 gear oil to help fill the gaps of all the shims.

did some testing on the fluid metering valve and it works like expected. Had a slight external leak but got that fixed with no problem. Mounted it to the turbo setup and now it is all ready to go back on the car with the red turbo. I will be much happier with the correct red turbo. I hope to get it back on the car and adjust the TV linkage this weekend.

I made a test fluid tank so I could bench test the fluid metering valve. That, a radiator pressure tester and a couple mityvacs and I was able to simulate the installed operation.

Don't laugh to hard at my video skills.

That car looks to be in really good shape. What's the history on it?

It is an original paint rust free car. It is a literal true story of a little old lady had it. She wasn't old when she bought it but kept it inside and didn't drive it much. When she was to old to drive she give it to the landlord of her house in trade for her to be able to stay in the house since she could not work. He kept it inside a nice building of some kind for it to stay in this condition. I bought it from that guys son and he remembers when the lady got it new. Has paperwork all the way back to the day she got it new.

I rebuilt the engine, transmission and the turbo system was rebuilt. Now I am changing out the turbo with this new system. I will later build another carburetor and injection for the silver turbo and install it on the 4 speed Jetfire we got.

That is interesting. Can't beat the original paint. Striking color too with that trim. Just mapped out Brazil Indiana from Charlotte for when I get frustrated with this car and load it on a trailer for you to get running. No burnouts!

Installed the radiator hoses last night and the red turbo setup this morning. I fired it up and immediately found that a copper cooling line going to the throttle body had a crack in it. Sure could not see it when I assembled it. It was not an easy line to get to. I think it would have been easier to pull the turbo back off. I got it fixed and fired up again. I think it is good now other than needing to make some adjustments. I can't do that till after I get the brakes done so I can drive it some. Also need to adjust the TV going to the transmission. That is a pain on the Jetfire because it is difficult getting your hand into the adjustment linkages.

I finished the brakes and done some tuning today. It boosts much harder than the old setup but I have to do a little more tuning. I have something going on at cruising speed. It feels like a miss of some kind but not sure yet what it is. Also think the transmission is shifting to late. I need to adjust the TV a little and that should be taken care of.

I have been working on this project off and on the past three weeks. It had a stumble at cruising speed and got worse as the engine temp went up. Idle and WOT was perfect. When I built this system I changed some things internally. I was trying to make improvements but was not sure how much they were going to really help. Well it turns out that they helped because it was running lean at a steady drive in the mid throttle range. I took the boost limit control butterfly and shaft out of the throttle body so it opened up the air flow a fair amount. There are only two jet sizes available for these and I do not have any jet drills the correct size to drill one bigger. I was talking to joesw31 and he recommended taking the needle out to fatten it up in mid throttle. I tried it and it worked perfect. The tip on the needle that sits in the jet is .045 so I have opened the mid throttle up a large amount. It may be to fat but it runs so good I am going to just leave it as it is for a while and see what happens. This car has never pulled this hard before. I think this turbo is boosting almost 1 psi more than the old one and at the same time I opened up the carb for it to pull more air and now it is pulling more fuel also. This all makes my wife happy because now she can drive it again. She missed the spring cool season so at least she can drive it in the fall cool season this year.
