Fuel pump whining

Hello. I have a 71 Toronado and have an EZ EFI system. I have a in-line fuel pump on it now and am starting to have problems with it. Just the other day I was driving around and when I pulled up to a stop light the fuel pump started making a whining noise and the the car died .I opened the hood and ther fuel pressur gauge was on 5-10 psi when its always on 43( their recommendation).I pulled up that the gas pump and added 12 gallons( it has a 25 gal. tank. After about 30 min I got it to work again an got it home. I orderd a new pump ,put it on started it up and it ran fine for 20 miles then I stopped waited about 30 minutes, then tried to start it and the whine came back and the fuel guage lost pressure just like before. does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be. Its almost acting like its not picking up fuel in the tank, but the tank was full when I added the new fuel pump. Its worked flawlessly for the last year. No problem on start up,idle, wot. I notice it has a ground wire that im going to check but im sure its not that simple.

Check the rubber line between the tank and the metal fuel line. You may have some junk in the pickup screen limiting the fuel flow.

Yes Great Idea. I think I will drain the tank remove it and see if it has any junk in it.the way the system works is that the line goes straight from the tank to the pump then to the prefilter then to the throttle body. The fuel gauge jumps from 0 to 60 when I trurn on the ignition fast then goes down to 40 then down to 20. It use to go straight to 43 psi as that is where I have it set per the manufacturer.

Electric fuel pumps are finicky with voltage swings so also check voltage at the pump at idle. I might be something as simple as a bad ground or loose connection.
