Getting closer..

I have finished putting the engine back in order and delivered back to the shop.

Here are some updated pics of the progress..

One question. The engine is a donor from another 72 cutlass put in by PO. My car did not have AC and the donor engine did have AC at one point. I had a few issues last year with overheating. The car came with no radiator shroud. Just a 19 inch clutch fan. As part of the rebuild, I ordered a Fuscik fan shroud for a 72. I am now having clearance issues and the fan is hitting the shroud. I've researched all the previous posts and interwebs and think the easy solution is to replace the 19 inch fan with an 18 inch fan.

I guess my question is, did the 72 Cutlass 350 come with an 18 or 19 inch stock fan?

Thanks for any insight..

I grew up in Slatersville and my sister teaches at Burriville... I got smart and moved south away from all that snow and ice stuff!

Shims fix the problem

19" fan.
1. Did you mount the shroud properly? There are 2 shroud mounts that need to be welded or bolted to the rad support.

2. If yes to ^^? Look at the diagram I'm attaching. You may need to shim the shroud to get the proper clearance for the fan. It should easily clear the shroud if properly mounted. Don't go with a smaller fan, fix the problem with the proper adjustments. You also need the rad side seals to complete the job of channelling air through the shroud.

3. The other thing you should check is your timing. If it's running hot the timing may be too far retarded. The timing on AC cars and non AC cars are not the same. 350 w/o AC is 8°BTDC, with AC is 12°BTDC.

[QUOTE=OLDSRI;623318]Hello All,

1972 Cutlass Supreme that previous owner slapped 442 badges on

I'm at work and haven't been able to read every word so if this has been asked, forgive me. Are you sure this isn't an original 442? Have you dropped the gas tank? Any option lists under a seat spring?

Wow I have got to get my act in gear. You started your car almost 1 year later than me and I think you will be driving yours first! Making great progress Oldsri.

Update..

She lives!

Thanks for the diagram Alan.. Fan and shroud are in and looks great.

She is all back together now and running great. Knock on wood.

Big difference in the ride from versus the old rotted out frame.

Nice safe driver now for the wife and kids.

I got the shoulder seat belts mounted. I will post pics of them soon.

Now just need to the warm weather here in the northeast!

She needs a cleaning from bumper to bumper!

Just one more thing to add to your rad shroud - missing the upper hose clamp to keep it from sagging when it gets hot. Refer to the diagram I posted (look at upper left side) and you'll see where it attaches.
Looks like this, and is 5.00 at Parts Place

Good work on your project - enjoy taking the family for rides!

Been MIA for the last month or so.. Catching up on everything else that got neglected.

Got her all cleaned up and had a few nice days to drive her up here in the Northeast. Ride is great.

Still need to order my upper hose clamp Allan... LOL.. But noticed a difference with the temps with fan shroud in place. Highway cruising pushed temp to 190. Got off highway and temp went back down to 165 so I think I am drawing much more air now.

Just curious why you went so far forward and back with that set of hood stripes. Personal preference?

I hear you!!!!!!

Previous owner did that.. I am not a big fan!

The paint was one of the only good things left on the car and the budget dictated they remain for now. Only the real "Olds Guys" notice the stripes.
