67 Delmont 88 Metalflake - ready for wet sand and final clear coats

A productive weekend. Applied the red base coat, clear, metalflake sprayed into the clear, and 3 heavy coats of clear. The car is now ready for wet sanding and 3 or 4 more coats of clear. That should happen in 2 weeks.

I like those weekends when you can see measureable progress

Thanks John. Last weekend, with the gunmetal stripes, was tough. We used an intermediate clear to hold the flakes and it was drying too fast--even with slow dry reducer.

Erik,

Thanks and here is a link to a semi-crappy video on YouTube. At least the metal flake is visible.

I love that body style more than about any other year!
I recently found a '67 Delmont convertible(has been since crushed) & a '68 Delmont coupe. The coupe still has some nice parts on it & I managed to grab a few parts off the '67 before they crushed it. Some trim pieces, antenna leads, some *****, etc...
The '68 had what appeared to be pretty nice doors. Might have to grab them whether you want them or not. I'll start a new thread so as not to hijack yours.

I bet it pops in real life, your pictures just don't do it justice.

Thanks for the comments and yes the camera doesn't really catch the metal flake. With that being said, my wife has an iPad with a really, really good digital camera. I'll try that after the final clear is applied and maybe it will look better.

The doors are pretty good--didn't require any patching on the outer skins.

The wheels are rally wheels from a GMC pickup. For the sake of $$$ I'll just buy tires this year and paint them in the same color as the stripes. On eBay I was able to get Olds stick on center caps to at least make it tolerable for this year....

I'm going to check with 3M but I believe that you can clear coat over their pinstripe. It will be black and will be between the red and gunmetal.

It pained me to bastardize such a piece of Americana but, so far, the custom work seems to blend together. It's the big, loud and gaudy scheme....
