1980 442
1980 442
Got really, really lucky. Bought a 79 Hurst Olds from Savanah a few years ago and sold it, and wish I hadn't immediately I did. There is a 80 442 that has been sitting behind a transmission shop for about 25 years a few miles away. Been trying to buy it for a while. It's not rotted out but in tough shape, especially interior wise, as it looks like a grenade had been thrown in and the doors shut. This vehicle would need a COMPLETE overhaul.
Got a call from a customer saying there is a 80 442 for sale 10 miles away. My thought was your kidding - 2 within a 20 miles radius?
Bought this car on the spot. Original paint- ridiculously solid - original interior ratty but all there. Previous owner replaced windshield - rebuilt 1970 350 - new trans - 4 tires - exhaust - fuel pump etc. Runs awesome.
In process of tear down - every panel to the metal. Floorboards and trunk stupid clean - even behind the rocker chrome.
Will be a car that I WILL keep because at 57 years of age, I've fixed up and sold around 12 others, some I wish I hadn't. Being probably less than 200 left, I figure it would be a good conversation piece at cruise ins.
I hate that the headlight bezels are a 1 year only. I'd have an easier time getting a complete from end clip and use the 79 Hurst Olds bezels, BUT it wouldn't be right for the year even though the engine and trans aren't right for the year.
It is simply amazing that the catalog value on an 80 doesn't sniff a 79 Hurst Olds, which you would think it would. In any case, I can say it is one vehicle that I can really say that I have no intentions of selling, unless someone offers me something stupid. Oldsmobiles are good cars and I've owned 4 Cutlasses now - 86 442 - 79 Hurst Olds - 88 Cutlass Supreme Classic and non of them were rotted out as it seems the factory or dealership undercoated them heavy.

200 left? Where you getting that figure? Nobody knows for sure. There are always those old cars in people's driveways or garages that they don't talk about or even join forums or go to car meets. You just never know where they are.
I could swear that I've read this very story somewhere before...
